  • Won't start up

I am having the won't start problem with this game (only other games who have it are starcraft and Rome:TW (that I have tried)). The problem probably relates to me using WinXP 64bit, but I am interested in a workarround if anyone knows any. As far as I can tell, I click on the thrones and patriots shortcut and nothing happens.

Same thing here. I just spent $30 on this game today and it doesn't work. I installed everything fine, but when I click "play" nothing happens. I've tried to open it every other way, but nothing works. Please help before I break my computer with a hammer!!!

well then we wont be able to help, now will we?

Iam wondering if you have enough memory and also if you have enough HD to run it?

I also wonder what your graphics card is like?

I ask because these games are pretty intensive..

I have XP on my laptop, tried d/l the axis and allies demo on it and it acted like I threw a sack of taters on its back..got real sluggish and then froze up

I think perhaps it may have to do with memory..(RAM) and/or procesor speed..

I have enough everything. I just downloaded the newest graphics card. I know I have enough MHZ and RAM, and I have enough space on my HD for it to work. I still don't know why it's not working.

          ok..just trying to help..

In past when I installed on one ROM (having 2 presumably) and tried to put into another it would not launch

I am not positive but look into the default for rom "Letter" maybe that is a rabbit you could chase down..It has been issues with other games

What do you mean "rom Letter?" I know the basics of computers, but I have no idea what you're talking about there

              forgive me

              "A" is used for Floppy

"B" used to be a big old floppy square kind about 4" X 4 " (I forget been years!)

              "C" Is HD (Hard Drive)

Then comes the rest if you have a partition for system back/restore it is usually "D" but not allways

The "ROM" or if you have a DVD/ROM or a Burner/ROM could be "Letter" D or "E" or what ever has been designated

If you have XP (I am assuming so)

              #1-Click Start

#2-on right side about half way up you will see "MY COMPUTER" left click and you will see what I have in attached image

then this will tell you what the letter for your "ROM" is or where you put your disc into to play

              Peace

Yup. I've tried opening the game this way too, it's in the E drive. Nothing.

                  ok..try this:

That is an issue many times

Rise of Nations uses SafeDisc encryption technology. Some CD-ROM drives may not be compatible with this technology, as follows:

                  · Acer CD-624a: If you experience problems with this drive when using real-mode drivers, install protected-mode drivers.

                  · Cybermedia 204: You may experience problems with this drive. There are no known solutions.

                  · Liteon 4265: You may experience problems with this drive. There are no known solutions.

                  · Memorex CD-RW2224: You may experience problems with this drive. There are no known solutions.

                  · Sanyo CRD-256P: If you experience problems with this drive, do not attempt to run Rise of Nations more than once before restarting your computer. Also, try ejecting and reinserting the CD-ROM.

                  · Sony CDU77E 2X: If you experience problems with this drive, make sure it is configured as a master, and then run the game again.

                  · Yamaha 2216E, 4416SX and CDR6416S: If you experience problems with these drives, contact Yamaha for a firmware upgrade. [http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/]

                    also..check this out:

                    I. Audio Troubleshooting

Check with your sound board manufacturer for the latest DirectX-compatible drivers.

Following are the known audio issues and workarounds:

                    · Audio stops playing: If some parts of the in-game audio (including combat sounds) stop playing after the game has been running for a while, add the -sw3Dsound command-line option to the Rise of Nations shortcut. To do so, left-click the shortcut and click Properties, and then in the Target box type -sw3Dsound at the end of the existing text. Click Apply and OK.

                    · Audigy 2: Using an Audigy 2 sound board may interfere with SafeDisc, the encryption technology used to protect Rise of Nations. To resolve this issue, disable the Audigy 2 splash screen. Also, if you play a DVD, you must restart your computer before running Rise of Nations.

                    · Aureal Vortex: Rise of Nations audio may not function with Aureal sound cards. To resolve this issue, turn off the hardware acceleration. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then choose Control Panel. Double click Sounds and Audio Devices and select the Audio tab. Click the Advanced button in the Sound Playback section and then click the Performance tab. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None and click Apply.

                    · SoundBlaster Live!: Using this sound card when running Rise of Nations on a Windows XP operating system may degrade game performance. To resolve this issue, turn off the hardware acceleration for this sound card. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then choose Control Panel. Double click Sounds and Audio Devices and select the Audio tab. Click the Advanced button in the Sound Playback section and then click the Performance tab. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None and click Apply.

                    · SoundBlaster Live! Wave: Sound will only come from one speaker when using the 5.1.2535.0 driver. To resolve this issue download and install the latest drivers from http://www.soundblaster.com.

                    · Onboard sound: Some audio hardware included on motherboards is not currently supported.

                    · DirectX: If you experience audio problems using DirectX, connect to the DirectX Web site for the latest troubleshooting information, as explained in the “DirectX Troubleshooting” section preceding.

I don't have any of those soundcards, or any of those CD Drives. I'm just going to return the game. It's not worth all this.

well its a good game and it may be an obvious oversight...hang in there for a little bit..

BUT u may be better off because the game may try you even harder once inside..
