RoN vs. Civ 3

I'm a fan of Civ 3 and play as often as I can (though I'm not all that good and have real trouble at the monarch level, which is the only level I play). I also was a big fan of Civ 1 and 2.

I've never played Rise of Nations and would like to know from those who've played both RoN and Civ 3 what they think about RoN.

I've played more RoN than Civ 3 (I've got all Xpacks to both games)... I liked Civ 1 + 2, but Civ 3 wasn't that much news to keep me going...

Personally I like rise of nations better.
Civ3 has some nice features but it hasn't kept my interest the way civ1 and civ 2 did (I always get a bit bored after the initial expansion and the rampant corruption makes further expansion difficult).
RoN can be played at so many different ways. It's, of course, RTS, but if you play it at slowest speed or pause it you have got a lot of time to make strategic decisions.

RoN is quick, convenient, gives you whatever level of challenge you like- from painfully easy to near impossible, and well... it's RTS.

I think it comes down to RTS vs. Turn based. Turn based can become quite static when the cities and forces pile up. It's the difference between a great 2 hour game (RoN) and a long strategic campaign (CIV3). Nothing wrong with either one. Just what you prefer.

CIV3 is great.. haven't played for ages, but now that I'm close to OD'ing on RoN, might go back to it.

You can't really compare them, but bear in mind that many people think Civ3 is a slightly less versatile derivative of Civ2.

Likewise, many people think RoN is a slightly less versatile derivative of Age of Empires.

Personally, I like Rise of Nations, but it's purely a stylistic choice. Civ3 looks and feels too much like an oversimplified mass-market game. Rise of Nations may be worse than the game it derives from, but at least it doesn't patronize the player.

I agree, they can't be compared. Oranges and apples.

I think Rise of Nations is the finest RTS compared to Age of Empires and Empire Earth. I dont think you could even really compare RoN with Warcraft III or Starcraft, even though they are all RTS.
