Why should I get RoN instead of, say, Age of Kings? I'm an interested consumer interested in getting RoN. Should I get it or just go spend $20 to play Age of Kings?

Without knowing your gaming history, likes and dislikes, it’s not possible for me to advise you properly. I can tell you that I’ve enjoyed both games, I prefer RoN, and now wouldn’t think of returning to Age of Kings/Conquerors.
The people at Big Huge Games, RoN’s developer, didn’t work on the Age games. RoN is its own design and plays differently from AoK; they represent two different RTS recipes. If you want, you can read at length the information here and elsewhere in RoNdom. My own hobby page contains my thoughts, though I’ve never specifically contrasted RoN with AoK.

I'll give you my $0.02 worth..:
I am, first and foremost a CALL TO POWER Fanatic..love it love it love it!
BUt..sticking to my next four favorite games..of which I am fairly split are:
RoN; Both original & Expansion Thrones & Patriots
AoEII:Conquerors Expansion
Empiresawn of The Modern World
C & C Generals:Zero Hour
I will say the reason RoN and AOEII are above other two:
The ability to easily Mod!
I love Modding, not that the original is bad, but for real, for those of us whom "immerse" ourselves, nothing like tweaking and trying new concepts, No I aint no programmer and many CTD's (Crash To Desktops) occur, I have enjoyed teaching myself how.
I love the games for different reason, two different times spans..while units look kewl in RoN AoEII had better looking in my humble opinion.
I am playing the mud out of RoN now..I have it so I can build a 3000+ pop with a peace period of 90 minutes..and trhen once timer goes off..YOU will need your resources..!!
TONS of battle to handle!
Thats my short(er) take that both are unique and both very enjoyable..
I like map changes..so you can easily edit existing or make your own map..VERY easily!
Ok..hope this helps!Hi, I'm RAH and I'm a Benaholic.-rah

The main difference in RoN is that it's also a well-designed game. I'm not talking about the overall product but about the mechanics. There is much more internal balancing to RoN than in any other RTS I've seen and less redundancy as well. In RoN you have to do everything and use everything or you'll likely lose.
What that comes down to is that RoN is a much more difficult game to get really good at. Just beating off the AI in a skirmish can be very tough.
Personally, I like that in a game, but if you're just interested in seeing your hordes kill the other hordes and have no preference for genre (in which KoC obviously differs from RoN), I guess either will do.
