Update; The Russian Horde of Spies. I just managed an Enlightenment win with 12 spies taking over 55 Aztec units; I lost a total of 12 units by games end. I found that I could build 3 cities straight to the Aztec capital on an Aussie outback map and still make city 3 my battle city. This enabled me to attack his capital directly when preparations were complete. I'm sure this strat can be used for an earlier win but the fact that spies can't be built until medieval is a constraint.
Patch 3; Has anybody noticed a change in AI behavior in Beta patch three? I have played a few games where the AI attacked my capital far in the rear rather than attacking my forward bases which were very close to AI cities. I have not observed this in previous RON versions. The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

The Aztec menace has been defeated in Gunpowder by our glorious Russian military with the help of our lovely ministers of information.

Here is a 52 second toughest win using the HeymlicH nomad rush. I would be willing to bet we're not going to be able to bring this number down by much...perhaps into the forties at best. Great strat HeymlicH!

Hehe, I chose bantu, too
Meanwhile I also use this strateagie for the "real" games. If I play an 8 player game and see an enemy peasant, I follow him to the capital construction place and eliminate this opponent. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference if I build my capital with 2 or 3 workers, but this way I have more space for expansion and this makes a difference (especially with the bantu)

This is one reason no one plays nomad.
In later-era AOE (after the game had been out a long time) the Assy villy rush was a common tactic once people realized the true value of 33% faster villies. It wasn't just for gathering resources.
With faster villies you can attack a villager and kill him off. If the enemy defends, you can run off and since you're faster they can't catch you. They then attack another lone villager. Because you're using 3-4 villies against 1, you can kill off dozens before they are able to kill you.

Yeps. It's fun, if you do it once. But I shouldn't call it a strategy
There is another reason why nomad is not fair. Tribes like egypts, french, nubians, that start with extra structures, don't get this advantage if you play nomad. But I want to decide myself where to place the capital. That's why I play nomad.

I wonder if sending a RON villie to disrupt the AI might yield more than it costs in a non nomad game. It seems that the AI villies don't have enough sense to even defend themselves! Ever tried it?
HeymlicH; I agree that a nomad rush isn't really a strat as much as it's an AI exploit. It is nonetheless the tactic to use to get the quickest win possible and that's what this thread is all about. Speaking of which, I know it's not your normal play style but have you tried any of your non rush strats to get an early win?Last edited by Drachen; September 3, 2003, 13:28.The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

If you build to 3 cities before you build a barracks and don't attack with armed units until Classic then is it considered a rush? I attacked the Inca with my 3 farm villies in Ancient and it tied him up in knots. There were 7 Incan capital villies garrisoned well into Classical by a single Bantu villie attacking a farm. I launched a hoplite attack in late Classic and took the win at 14 min while still in Medieval. I think this strat will be good for a Classical "non Rush" win.

Assyrian and Yamato villagers were both faster - I think it was orginally 33%, then reduced to 20-25% for ROR.
