  • Idea for expansion: Nuclear wasteland and Future age

    How about:

When too many nukes are launched instead of the game ending (which is a copout for the loser as he can just launch 1 more nuke for a draw), the landscape turns into a black desert wasteland and resources severely diminish. Technology goes a step backward and new units become avaliable that are reminiscent of the mad max films. For example, your infantry could become crossbowmen (futuristic looking of course) or be limited to weapons such as shotguns and pistols. As the end game would be low in resources, few units could be built and the battles would be more like low scale wars of attrition, hit and run etc.

If somehow there is no armaggedon past modern, then a future age could be researchable with units not too futuristic, say about 40 years from now on.

These 2 directions could add spice to the game and as RoN prides itself on a game not taking more than an hour, they could be made to last only 10 minutes.

I know there are some flaws with the ideas but it would be good to see things like this. Anyone have more suggestions?

Sounds interesting... at least the future part of the game would be interesting
This space is empty... or is it?

      *IF* tastefully done.

[Can't stress the *IF* too much.]

That's true, it could really suck and detract from the game if done poorly (but that probably wouldn't be an issue for an excellent company like BHG).

          i don't like it.

mostly because it's far too risky-- i can't imagine it being done well in the scope of a game like ron.

look at empire earth or civ:call to power if you want examples of future ages blowing so hard that they screw up the enjoyability of the rest of the game.

Actually the Future part is one of the few well done things in ctp...

Maybe it could be like that book, the Chrysalids.

the world has Nuclear Catastrophy, and everything goes back to the Ancient age.

or like what was proposed in Dr. Strangelove. the players build underground bunkers (mine shaft civilization) for people to survive in, and then when Nuclear Catastrophy comes for everybody, the fight starts over, with whoever had the most bunkers having an advantage.

"We can not allow, a mine shaft gap!"

I like the idea of a Nuclear Wasteland, very good idea indeed! Also there might be a wonder or something you can build in the future that will allow you to bring back the world before the bombs hit, like on Fallout 2. The Future Age is good too but I'm thinking it could be similar to Deus Ex if any of you have played that game. Units would have machine guns but with laser sights, robots for military use and of course soldiers with cybernetic implants.

And like in terminator, when the machines become too powerful and take over, the ai would take over control of your civ (preceded by a countdown similar to the armageddon timer - use too many future robots on the battlefield and suffer).

still very much against this idea. i don't want ron to turn into an empire earth or ctpx; both games, imho, became damn near unplayable after the modern era precisely because the future was, for lack of a better term, dorky, not to mention game-breaking, infuriating, and painfully poorly designed.

if you're going to have a future era, do it in a different game: like the split between civ2/3 and smac.

Maybe they could add a small textbox when starting a game:

◘ Play game with future ages
This space is empty... or is it?
