  • MS Visual C ++ Runtime Library Runtime Error!

When I try to play a new Solo game (no matter the civ.), I get the "...Visual C++ Runtime Library Error... abnormally terminated."

I'm using an HP Pavillion 8760C
    733 mhz
    128 mb ram
    16 mb video
graphics card is NVIDIA Vanta/ Vanta LT

I have all the graphics on "low"

I have the most recent drivers installed but can't for the life of me figure what is going on. I just got the game today. It has let me play all the tutorials just fine. I just can't start a new game.

Thank you for your help. I really need it.

note: it is only in CTW that this happens. The thing almost loads it all and then the error comes up, shutting the game down completely.

The next time write down the full error message. You can go to microsoft website and check its knowledge base.
      Search for:
      - Error code, if there is, or
      - Specific error message. Not the "Visual C++ Runtime Library Error" or "abnormally terminated" (too generic). An example: "Missing file abcde.dll", or
      - Failing all that post the message here see if anyone can help.

My guess it's a corrupt/missing VC++ runtime library file and/or registry. Simple (re)installation of runtime (not whole Windows) should fix it.

Thanks, but I assure you that IS the whole error message. I did write it down. There is nothing else. No missing files noted or anything. Just 'abnormally terminated' I'm guessing I can get runtime from the microsoft site to reinstall...? Thanks again for your help.

I'm getting the same message also under the same conditions.

            My comp specs:
            PIII-800 (133), 196MB SDRAM, nVidia TNT2 M64 32MB vidcard. OS: Win98 SE.

Graphics all on low. Running at 1000+ x 700+ x 16bit resolution. Game runs fine. All quick battle games can be played but once on CTW campaigns, will cause same problem.

Once this has happen, RON can't be re-run w/o reboot. It will only crash the machine. Machine can't be reboot via shutdown->restart. Must be reboot via reset button, otherwise will freeze at shutdown screen.

So far never fails to repeat this process.

                Try running DxDiag.exe.

See if there's any notice or error message.

Do the diagnostic test on everything.

                Any error?

You may want to (re)install VC++ runtime. Not sure if this will help. Since those who actually got the problem solved didn't post.

Have you all installed the latest patch for the game? This is from the official RoN site (http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseo...ns/support.asp):

"When you play Conquer the World, the game may unexpectedly quit and display a "Visual C++ Runtime Error!" message.

To resolve this issue, please download and install the latest Game Update (above). If this resolution does not work for you, please try the following work-around (XP users, ignore "Settings" in Step 1):

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display .
                    Click Settings.
Under Color Quality > select Highest (32 bit).
                    Click OK.
                    Start Rise of Nations.
                    Click Options and Profiles.
                    Click Graphics.
                    For Resolution, select a 32 bit setting. For example, 1024 x 768 x 32.
                    Click OK
If this does not work around the problem, try setting the game to a 16 bit setting."
