    I was one of the unlucky few(many?) unable to proceed in CtW when I attacked a territory in turn 1. It would get to some point in the loading, usually "placing leaders and starting locations" or some such thing, and blam exception, CtD. So I tried every last fix on this site as well as the support page, to no avail. I then relented and played a quick battle for an hour or so, quit that, then before exiting RoN tried a CtW again, and made it into the RTS battle stage, no CtD!. Well, not the first turn anyway; I couldn't attack Mesopotamia w/o crashing in turn 2, but I could attack further south on the Arabian peninsula. So, I don't know how many turns I will be able to play into this, and any stradegy I would want to employ is hindered, but still worth it until a comprehensive fix in a patch is released.

    So I thought I would pass this along to those of you still trying to get into CtW, which is why I bought this game to begin with. I don't know which of these in particular was required, if not all. I updated my video driver, updated DirectX to 9.0a, changed my color resolution from 32 to 16 bit, modded the rise2.ini and that video text file (based on that post here somewhere), and then clean booted using msconfig (as clean as possible). As I said, still no luck until I played a quick battle before started CtW. I just play into the QB for a few seconds now. Hope that helps get people a few turns or more into CtW or maybe help my fellow programmers nail this bug down.

    You actually NEED to be in 32 bit mode to run CtW correctly on some video cards. This problem is fixed in the next patch. You might try switching back to 32 bit mode to see if that helps.

      Thanks for the clarification... I had read differing recommendations on color depth. I set it back to 32 bit when 16 bit failed to pass the crash point.

      It is odd that attacking one territory would crash, another not, everything else being equal. Also that running a quick battle before CtW allows passing the crash point for select territories.

      Has anyone tried the workaround in the start of this thread? I was hoping for additional feedback to attract more BHG eyeballs.

        Well, I've found a few more tweaks to proceed further into CtW. Dialing down all of the DirectX settings in advanced display settings got me a few more turns before becoming stuck on a crash. I could see no difference in graphic quality either. I was then able to turn off sound acceleration in dxdiag to get past the battle load crash. Sound then lagged naturally, but I could save the game, switch back the sound setting, and proceed in the battle; it was only needed to get past the load from CtW. Quite a few hoops to jump through for each battle.

        But alas, I have crashed again, and I don't know what else there is to tweak. That should do it for me until the patch.
