  • Online players and ease of finding games

I've been playing the RON demo and it has been amazingly fun. I'm amazed by all the new features but I was once amazed by an RTS called C&C: Generals a few months ago. Though the game is great, it can be hard getting a game when there are less than 100 people online (during odd hours of the night) and it is impossible to play a game with over 4 people without ridiculous amounts of slowdown and lag. Generals is more computer intensive, I know but it is possible that RON could have these problems as well..

I've read RON has had some multiplayer lag issues but the fairly low requirements for the game and the intensity at which the devs are working on patches leaves me to believe that all will be well soon enough.

My question is approximately how many people currently play the game online and how easy is it to find and start a game at this point in time?

I can usually find a game within 5 minutes of logging on, sometimes it will take that long because i'll get in a game, we launch, and somebody drops for an unknown reason. Then we have to start over agian (if we wanted to go 2v2 or something i mean, we'd need 4 players, not 3).

How many people do you estimate are online (on average and at peak hours)?

        i'd estimate somewhere from 30-60.

Don't forget that is people *looking* for games, that doesn't include people already in games.

So how does it run with a 56k connection?

And that it is still a new game, give it some time, it has only just been released in (some places?) in Europe.

I am finding it hard to find slow games. I still can't handle normal speed, so I look only for slow ones.
Firaxis - please make an updated version of Colonization! That game was the best, even if it was a little un-PC.

Why does RoN not show up on the gamespy stats list? I see that ut2k3 demo and sof2 demo are even on the list and I can't imagine from what I have heard that RoN has even fewer online players than them.

It's just kind of strange because everything that utilizies gamespy is on that list...is it because once someone finds a game they are no longer considered on gamespy?

                    That's my guess anyway...

The gamespy stats are for Server-Cliant games. You can't measure the # of players in a P2P game.

I have to say here, that finding a game is kinda bleak (seems like there's only ever about 10), but once i create a game, people jump in like cockroaches in a breadbox.

If you're looking for a slow game or any particular type, just host it yourself. That's my advice.

The lobby doesn't show games in progress. So even though there tends to only be 8-14 games being setup, there's actually a lot more being played.

albiedamned, I will play a slow game, but not thru gamespy, TCP/IP is better

but I don't think you can save the game in multi? If you can't, then don't bother. I'm not playing a game half way thru and the net decides to crash or something.

Ummmm, once the game starts, there is absolutely zero difference between Gamespy and TCP/IP. Gamespy is only for setting up the match.
