  • Update: MP Lag, CtW Crashes, etc.

    Just an update and some help:

    * CtW Crash. This one might say something like "abnormal program termination". We finally got a repro and there is a pre-patch2 workaround that will probably work for most people:

    Run the game in 32-bit color depth and also have your desktop in 32-bit color depth. The later requirement isn't necessary for all video cards but I think this combination will cover everything. We'll get this fixed for patch 2.

    * MP Lag. Someone was gracious enough to send us his computer which reproed the problem. We received it today and wrote a fix which seems to work. Basically, when running Rise of Nations, the computer's internal clock would run slow, to the tune of losing about 100ms/s! This appears related to a power supply issue. An adjusted algorithm for time synchronization should compensate for this sort of issue. I think this, in various forms, is the major lag issue that people have had with MP. What makes it truly awful is that it affects anyone playing in a game with such a system. The fix will be in patch 2.

    * Problems hosting behind NATs. We have a repro of this and hope to have the fix in shortly.

    The current agenda for patch 2 is:

    * MP Lag fix.
    * CtW crash fix.
    * Fix to not being able to host behind NATs.
    * Fix to ranking system.
    * Fixes that allow us to robustly test patches before release.
    * A separate "Check for Updates" button.
    * Some small, misc fixes and tweaks to be announced.

    The testing for patch 2 will probably take us through this Thursday (5-29-03). With luck, we'll have it up soon after.

    Thanks for the support,

        After just wasting 4 hours on an epic campaign battle, then getting booted to windows just when I achieved victory (at this point I realised the game didn't autosave), I really wanted this fix, so ...

        checked my desktop setting - 32 bit

        checked my game setting - 32 bit

        Sigh, I love this game but I feel so sick I just can't play it right now.

            It's nice to get these kinds of detailed progress updates. It's greatly appreciated.
            If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.

              "4 hours without saving"

              Yeh, I know it's stupid, but I only need the saves for crashes, as I never use save games to recover a losing position. In fact, by and large, I find most games don't crash too much, so I don't really need to save too much. And there's often an autosave ...

              After looking more closely, I see that the game does have some autosaves, but, strangely, they were all set before my own save which I did shortly after starting.

                I am a fanatical saver. I have had just too many bad experiences with my computers crashing, that sometimes I save every 10 minutes. I only use saves to recover from crashes as well, and although compulsive saving might seem annoying, I am a bit glad for it in the end.

                This is really great, I am really happy I spent my money on this game. I have never seen a game before where the programmers post updates on fan forums letting us know what is going on. I myself have not been able to play CTW yet, even after updating my drivers and checking that 32-bit thing. However seeing this and knowing that a patch is in development to fix it and will be released soon greatly relieves the frustration. Thanks very much.

                  I just noticed that my clock is extremely behind too! This after playing much RoN. My power supply is top-notch though (Antec 1080amg case with 430watt PS).

                    We haven't researched it extensively, yet; we went ahead and wrote a work-around. However, another possibility is that sound or network drivers are spending too much time in their interrupts. It would be interesting to know if you have more recent sound or net drivers available and if that fixes your clock slowdown.

                    Thanks,
                    J

                        Well when I saw this post I had hopes that maybe I could solve the problem I was having by swapping out hardware or updating drivers. Well I tried the driver thing first, both my LAN and sound drivers but it still lagged in multiplayer. Then I also read that it might be a power supply problem so I swapped out 2 other power supplies and it still lagged. This is worrying me because of what jcoleman has said. I know it’s not my power supply. I have even gone as far as swapping every part of my computer out except RAM and Motherboard (Asus a7n8x). I hope the patch will still help me because I really like this game.

                        Thanks for the support BHG

                          I got rid of the lag!!!! It seems it was the motherboard bios that was causing the problem. I updated to the latest one and it was fixed. I wonder if the patch would have done me any good.

                          Anyway i have an ASUS a7n8x if anybody else has this update to bios 1004. If you are having this problem on any ASUS board i would this.

                          Just thought i would pass this along

                              I only save myself if I have to leave the game for some reason.

                              I never use saved games to recover a bad position in any game. Playing "Iron Man" makes me take more care of what I am doing.

                              I have often played games for 20 hours or more straight and then lost because of a mistake in my strategy. OK - start over .... when I *do* get a win though then I know I deserved it
