In multiplayer games, how is the skill level between players matched up, is there random matchups or do you have to join games? I am hoping its like WC3 where you gain lvls for winning and lose them for losing, is it going to be something like that?

The game uses Gamespy which has twenty lobbies that are labeled rated (0-9) and unrated (0-9) already set-up. You have to get with a beta-tester or wait til tuesday to find out how these work within the game."The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved - loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves."--Victor Hugo

Once the game is out there somebody will create a ladder at www.myleague.com . It is a free service. The only problem is players move up only by beating players high ranked then them. Also, MY League only allows a winner/loser reporting, so 3+ player games will have to come up with an alternative reporting method. One ladder I have seen has you report a loss to every player who finished higher than you. But, we will see once the game is out there for a couple of weeks."The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved - loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves."--Victor Hugo

it doesnt really work well if you just play ur friend who loses all the time and get to top 10.
first of all, he has to play at least 10 games first with that account before he can play rated, so he ll have to spend some time on it before start losing to u.
In addition, the microsoft rating system is very well thought
if you are 1600 points and u play someone 1600, when u win, u may gain 30 points, but when u are near 1700, each win will give u like 1 point
and then when u are above, each win give you no point at all...
so u cant really play people who are a LOT worse than you and still get more points, u have to play with people who are within some range of you.
