Today I started a fresh new game of the game type "Assassin" with 5 other computer players and modified rules. Namely, I increased the cost of all technology by two and a half, set age progression to about 10-15 minutes as well as bumping each individual technology's time to 2 minutes and halved the unit costs so wars could be fought more easily during the earlier ages. I set the difficulty on moderate and I'm playing as the Bantu( I set the civs on random ). The result truely is some of the best gaming I've ever expierenced! And I don't even like real time strategy games.. Anyways, for those who don't know about the "Assassin" game type it's really great. Basically each player is given a "target" or a civilization only they can attack without suffering severe attrition damage when going into their territory. And obviously each player is also told who they are being targeted by. So in my game, I had the Egyptians on one side of me, and the Chinese on the other, the rest of the civs were on the other side of the map. I had been targetted by the Chinese, which only have 2 cities compared to my 5 but remarkably they have been giving me trouble on my eastern front. I have one city located there surrounded by 3 guard towers and a fort all garrisoned with my Impi fighters and so far have held together from the Chinese's constant barrage of attacks. Just north of there on practically the border between them and me is a precious resource which reduces technology by 30%, so I had my workers surround the resource with guard towers as well as a fort and again it has held up. Luckily the Chinese aren't sending a lot of siege weapons my way, but when they do I have 5 light horses garrisoned nearby to take them out when they enter my territory. Now remember, I can't fight the Chinese in their own territory because of the heavy attrition I'll take, my target is the Egyptians, and I must admit, I'd take the Chinese over the Egyptians any day. Why? Because the Egyptians have so far built ALL the wonders available up to the Medevial Age( I think they can build wonders one age in advance ). Everytime I try to mount an offensive I eventually get overwhelmed by the sheer number of troops that they throw at me( and I think it's mostly from that damn wonder that produces a unit every 30 seconds or whatever ). I finally got smart and built up a bunch of guard towers along my western border and I hope I can eventually take one of those cities. I'm currently rebuilding my army and am going to try another strategy using light horses and trebuctets since they seem to like "elite javlineers" so much. What I found kinda funny is when I retreated from my battles with the Egyptians, they followed me into my territory and eventually there whole army was decimated because of the attrition damage. But so far it has been pretty much a perfect stalemate. It's so fun being able to actually have a bunch of wars through each Age.. I really don't know why Big Huge Games decided to make the age progression so short..
The timer in game has me at almost 2 hours of play time and i'm not even out of the Medieval Age yet( i'm upgrading though..) and so far I've had some really great defensive and offensive battles. Anyways..just thought I'd share my great experience with everyone.
