Planet type

As many others, I am frustrated, but keep on trying. Here's what I need help about:

I noticed that planets change their Type (designation, whatever.. I cant remeber the name, and you'll know what I'm talking about) as time passes.

First ist New, and Primary, then Primary and Secondary and so on.....

What triggers these changes and how do I know in what order are this changes gonna happen?
