I am sure I have missed another easy to see tidbit, but I can not make up a TF and put the type of ships I want in it.
If I do say a Flotilla and call it a carrier, it gives me a specfic number and type of ships I can add.
Why in the heck can't I put my shiney new BB on picket?
Why can't I put any ship I want on pick or escort or core?
Give me an open class so I can use any type of ship I want. I will live with the ship limit, but let me choose the class. In WW2, the USN had to stick other than the prefered type in some roles.
This has prevented me from creating some TF's as I did not have the requiste ship types or number.
Yes, I know I could eventually get the hang of it and make the proper stuff, but it seems silly.

I agree that they should give us some kind of general purpose fleet type. I mean, if I have a colony in trouble and need to send a fleet in to protect it, I shouldn't have to wait to get enough of a certain kind of ship to build a TF. I should be able to gather whatever I have and meet the enemy.

You can still build flotila, it is the largest that don't need picket ships. Alternatively, you can build your LR or PD or whatever and change it to recon before saving. This would save a lot of problem when forming armada.

So, in essence, BlueDEvil, are you saying that it is the mission that is critical to where the ship goes in the TF? If so, I could theoretically have a TF of all Battleships with the same equipment, but in different missions...ala MOO2?

From my experience (mentioned in a differen thread), the recon mission isn't sufficient to qualify for picket duty, you need a ship with one of the detection specials. From what others have said, but I haven't tested, the mission isn't important, just the special.

Is there any particular reason why these limitations exist in the first place? Completely alien races of gas bags that feel bound by the rules of the US Navy aren't really good for suspension of disbelief.

I suspect that it is just a convention that was chosen.
