From the SitRep, drill down to planet detail, it spacebar to bring SitRep up again.
When you click on close, you will go back to the last planet detail screen, but the planet graphic will not show up, only the queue graphics and ring around the planet graphic. Only way to get out of this screen is to go to some other screen (technology, etc) and hit close which takes you to the galaxy map.
