Theres a bug with the Autosave that happens the year you die. You can take over playing as an AI empire. Or if you lost by bankruptcy/revolt/Senate(I think) you take over as your old Empire. Its pretty useful and a way to continue Senate games, and good for modders to test how things affect the AI.
