Missles/fighters?

What do I need to modify/build spacecraft that have missles? I have multiple missle technologies, missles bases, state of the art space craft with all kinds of energy weaponry. Oh and fighters, I have no clue how to build fighters, not even a starting idea. It says in the IN GAME manual something like, "first need to select the weapon you want and then click the fighter tab?" I don't know, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

When designing a ship, press the weapons button and you'll see 3 tabs in the upper area of the weapons screen: "Fighters", "Missiles" and "Direct".
