..I just want to know how to put my own damn ship designs in the shipyard queue. Spent four hours last nite watching the AI pump out colony ships...not my designs...
You have to have the proper facility built on the planet in order to build ships of greater size. The stuff at the top of the build selection list.
I may be wrong about this, but sometimes it seems like I have the tech to design the ship, but not the tech to build the facility to make that ship - Cruiser is a hull design that immediately comes to mind.
You can also select to build x5 or x10 of the ship in the buld queue. Not so useful early on but great later when you need/have the capacity to build larger task forces.

You need a planetary structure to make cruisers. I can not recall if it is Matter Conversion module or Space Environment something or nother.
You will surely have the tech, but probably have not build the module needed.
The AI will also not build ships that need to long to be finished. So you also a lot of Industry to see it been built by your viceroys. I always design through all Sizes so that the VR may choose the Size he wants to build. Works well and he's right, when he think's i'd not like to wait 40 turns for a Ship because it would be obsolete by then.
Thanks guys, I stumbled across it about an hour after I posted this. It is in fact hidden, bad design....Im really having a hard time enjoy this right now, which is ashame, I had high high hopes for it. Back at it tonite though...
