  • Detection System Special Question

OK you've got these ship specials called detection systems (Focus Detection Array, etc.) They say the make things appear closer than they are. I've fought through alot of the vaugeness of the descriptions of stuff in this game pretty well (and patiently, I might add), but I can't crack this one, so I'll pose it to any of you who might know for sure.

Does this act like targeting computers in MOO2, or is this some sort of sensor for the galaxy map? It doesn't say anything about chance to hit, or range modifiers, just says makes objects appear closer. If it is a targeting device, does every ship need one, or will one picket ship equiped with one do the job for the whole TF? The autobuild seems to like to use them, but I can't tell for sure what they do, or if they are ship-specific, IE a warship with one will do better in combat than one without. Thoughts?

I don't know if this is the answer, but in my last game, I always put a Focused detection array on my scout ships and here is what happened.

I could 'see' about 1 jump ahead of me. By 'see' I mean that I could tell if another race owned a system before I got there. And these were races that I had no diplo contact with, so I couldn't ahve gotten the info that way.

So my suspicion that it only works on the galaxy map seems to be correct, and I can safely remove them from my auto-ship designs to make room for more weaponry(but may want to keep them on recon ships). Or so it would seem. Shame to have to mine forums for info that should be in the game, ain't it? But thanx for the observation.
