  • Avoiding combat

Ok, I'm getting kinda irritated here. How do i avoid attacking planets with my scouts? I'm just poking around and everytime I find someone's world, I am forced to either assault it or blockade it.

Why would I want to do either to someone I don't know? This doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

And I know I can retreat from it, but them my ships head back down the damn starlane. . .

I don't want to attack anyone with my scouts. . . I just want to scout.

On the combat screen, set it to blockade rather than assaulting. If the enemy isn't P.O.ed, they'll leave you alone to continue exploring. They'll attack you because you look like you are going to scout around his empire with that scout ship.

Hmm. I see. I figured they both initiated combat, because it didn't paticuarly matter which one I clicked. I suppose their system ships were just intercepting me the times I clicked blockade.

Just another issue of something happening without an explanation why I suppose.

thats one of the biggest beefs i have with moo3. it just takes getting used to.

the initial diplomatic standing is technically still "unpronounced war". if you want your scouts to not bombard them, just enter and leave, but unless you have that pact, they have every right to engage you, and vice versa.

if you just sit in there it assumes you wanted to bombard, otherwise you would have left.

thats my reasoning though, i could be wrong.

So, I guess this means every first contact situation is a disastrous first contact situation.

It seems to be unless they are unarmed or have no defenses.

Aside from it being clearly stated in the manual.

              summerised from the manual:
Intercept Fleet/Attack Planet: Attack the other fleet. Combat will Occur.

Hold Position/Blockade the Planet/Defend the Planet: Stay back and wait to see if the other fleet attacks you. Combat will only occur if the other fleet selects the intercept option. Otherwise, you both remain in the system but there is no combat. Neither side can colonize planets in the system.

Ahh, thankyou. I must have missed that bit.

Yeah... it seems that anyone not predestined to hate you will normally let you pass until you make a Non-Aggression Pact. Then you are seemingly blocked from any entry into their borders until you make either an Alliance or Open Trade Agreement.

Just keep Blockading, and you should be okay.

BTW, for real fun, try putting your colony ship in the same system as an opposing colony ship. Watch them both block each other from colonizing. lol
