  • MOO2 Cursor Freeze W2k

I have Win2k SP3 on an NTFS partition and am trying to run MOO2. Probably my first mistake right there.

But anyways, I am experiencing a bug where in Win95 mode, the cursor won't move at certain points. Randomly clikcing on dialogue boxes and changing screens sometimes helps, but it basically makes the game unplayable. I have, as other FAQ's and forums have suggested, installed the compatablility layer and the game IS being run under Win95 compatability mode. Anything I can do?
Also, I've tried running under DOS mode, but the cursor won't move out of the top-left portion of the screen, and pressing any key makes the game glitch and crash, also rendering DOS mode unplayable.
I could really care less about DOS mode if I could get Windows 95 mode working, but I'd be more than grateful if anyone could help me getting this awesome game to work right.

      Progress Update

Me again, and I have been trying solutions proposed at ntcompatable.com. It cliams that the only two things that cause a problem like this are: MouseWare 9.6 and not having the latest nVidia Detonator drivers. I installed the Detonator drivers even though the mose problem they described wasn't identical to my problem.
The MouseWare issue, however, was dead on to what I'd been experiencing. And I also had MouseWare 9.6 installed. But I have tried both removing the MW software, changing the drivers for the mice, and even removing all Logitech pouinting devices, and it does not effect the glich whatsoever. If anyone happens to have experience dealing with pointer issues...

I am not only doing this for myself, but for all the other people out there who imght have this problem.
      Really, I am.
No, I'm not a filthy liar.

For me, the following procedure always solves this problem:

          1. Hit escape until you are all the way back to the main galaxy overview

          2. If cursor is still frozen, hit G (brings up the game menu, load, save etc)

          3. Hit escape

The cursor is moving again! Kinda weird...

My understanding is that this is an issue with how early DirectX games deal with deprecated calls in newer directX versions.

Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing you can do. DirectX5 or 6 ship bundled and built-in in W2K, and that's enough to hose you.

One decent option - e-mail MS and tell them that this game doesn't work. They might fix it. Maybe.

Maybe they will update Moo2 to use Direct X 8.1 or there abouts to package with Moo3 in a bundle. Not likely, but I wish. Of course they could add in Moo as well to the bundle, if they have the rights.
If Moo3 is good a lot of people will be looking for the older versions.

To fix this, type in dxdiag at the start->run prompt, go to the display tab, and disable directdraw acceleration. The game should work correctly.

Just remember to re-enable it when you're done.

Oh, make sure you're running it with the win98 compatability layer too.
