  • Borg wannabe technology

I just saw the Star Treck movie with the borgs and they are pretty cool. What I liked most was the fact that they adapting shield that adapted to different kinds of rays after only a few shots. Hope this could be implented in Moo3 to create a diversity or equiped beam weapons on the ships. Stellar converter only anyone?

I think in moo2 there was a tech upgrade called multi-phased shielding which improved equipped shields by 50%.

Nono, this has nothing to do with enhancing the shield but rather adapting to the beam fired so that it wont cause any dammage after adaption is complete. Of course this should be an item that is researched in late development, but still it would be cool

Anyone know how far Moo3 will go devoping wise?

Logically, if you had that, then you would have beams that would also adapt to the type of shield being used.

        ACK!

It's a corundum. Or conundrum, either way its a goofy word.

I am afraid it's much more complicated than that. All energy weapons are already on modulating frequencies as determined by their power supply. What is happening is the opposing shield is adapting itself as to be completely destructive interference against the beam. Oppositely if the firer can adjust their frequency, they could become completely constructive with the opponents shields and increase weapon strength.

Remodulating either the shield or weapons should be an extremely labor intensive task, as having this as a built in function would most likely reduce efficiency an extreme amount.

For any tech buffs out there, yes this is science fiction, but they mix in a bit of fact, so we can say "It's not true, but...".

I always loved how despite the major threat the borg were supposed to pose, nobody ever thought to stop using energy weapons against them, and just use some more traditional guns. I could see how it might be difficult to refit ships to use projectile weapons, but it was incredibly stupid that they never used them in ground combat. Given how slowly the borg move, and their complete lack of missile weapons, one person with a machine gun could probably take out dozens if not hundreds of them (if he had the ammo). Even a small cache of traditional guns would have made first contact a very short movie.

                lol...
First contact ends with a guy freaking out with a railgun and the movie ends in 10 min of slaughter
                cute movie eh

I'm pretty sure the Borg had basic shields. Federation lasers could penetrate them as long as the frequency was only used once. I remember seeing an episode on NG where debris was falling on a small group of Borg and they lit up like the Dune shields, avoiding harm. I also remember Warf trying to deck one with a steel beam or bar and that wasn't effective either.

Well in First Contact they made it pretty clear that normal physical attacks were quite effective on Borg. A couple were killed when the holodeck simulated a machine gun, and others were killed in hand to hand combat using melee weapons. I seem to remember this being the case in other episodes too. So I don't believe they had any kind of basic personal shields. Although it would not surprise me at all if they were inconsistant about this point.
