  • Reconcerning MultiPlayer

I never have played any game online with human players. What I would like to know is how you do it. I mean with what scale? Like a small universe with say only 3 opponents? That would be a quick game compared to huge universes with 8 or more opponents.

I am interested in playing online but time is precious and like to know how long a game lasts or if its continued later etc.

we'll just have to see what game play is like before we can know what settings work best for mp.

Given the nature of this beast I'd be surprised if anything but smallest setting with fewest players was good for simultaneous MP. PBEM is another matter.

i was thinking the same thing. any game you play could take a month or more, depends on how driven the players are to get their turn done quickly.

It was common in multiplayer MOO2 for players to choose a medium size map and finish the game in 2 nights. Or one long Sunday sitting.

EDIT: Forgot. Since MOO3, according to the developers, takes slightly less time to finish than MOO2, I'm left optimistic.

yes but multiplayer in MoO2 was horribly slow. not only did you have to wait forever for each person's turn to be done (no timers, no simultanious moves), but you also had to wait about a minute or two just to start your turn!

i did play hotseat multiplayer MoO2, but never had the patience to play over a network

                Neither have I!

But I intend to play this one as soon as i mastered its mechanics, after a few weeks (say, around Dec. 25)

I hope to start games on Friday evening and finish them on Sunday evening. It should be long enough to be interesting

Is it going to support PBEM? I never see it mentioned.

There is no PBEM support for MOO3.

I've never had much fun playing a strat type game in MP mode. Too much dead time. The designers always try to come up with a way around it but, IMNSHO they haven't found the answer yet.

Actioners like HW and any of the Red Alert series work good in MP. I've had some fun with RPGs in MP, but our parties always broke up when some bozo (many times me) wanted to chase after something.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the dead time in MOO]|[.

Multiplayer MOO3, imho, and like nearly all MP games (except MMORPG's obviously) would probably be best played across a LAN. There is so much more atmosphere with LAN gaming and "dead time" wouldn't seem so dull (not to mention adding in all those Internet problems like cost or disconnection). And with LAN, of course, there is always the oppertunity to physically beat an opponent into getting on with things
