ship combat: 2d/3d plane

i know the space combat is in 3d voxels and looks really good and all, but is it like i think it is 2d plane like star trek armarda 1 or like homeworld in full 3d plane?

i thought it would be 2d, the designers probably thought 3d would be too complicated with the huge fleets
