I am reinstalling MOO2 on my computer and it's been a while since I have played.

My question is, how is the spying game in MOO2? I have read somewhere that the computer cheats at spying. What I would like to know since I love playing the spy game, (Darloks rule in MOO1) is, can I spy and steal techs against the AI? Are my spies effective against the computer?

I remeber stealing some tech from the AI, but never thwarting the enemy AI or any sabotage.

    Any comments would be apprceatied.

Spying with patch 1.31 is considerably harder. Now that you mention it, only yesterday I managed to steal my first tech on multiplayer (Terraforming! Pissed the crap out of that guy)!

About the AI, well, it's kind of the same. It's dificult, but it's possible. You just need a reasonable number of spies to be successful. At the begining I used to play against the AI with unification (+15% agent) and telepathic (+10% spy & +10% agent), so I had pretty good spying rates right from the beginning of the game.

Stealing can be easy, even with 1.31, but you have to be smart about it. I take a telepathic and +10 spy race. I research all the spy techs. Once I have cyber security link and stealth suits I start mass stealing. Try to start with the weaker spy races, especially if they don't have much spy tech. Basically add up your spy %'s and theirs and if yours is higher you got a chance. If it's much higher you can take everything they have. I usually use 4 spies per race that I am stealing from.

I have 20 spy as my pick and I stole some tech as soon as I met the Humans and the Klackons. I got caught with the human and they declared war on me and then with no combat at all asked for peace with a 10% tribute to me, so I accepted.

WOW I love this game. I forgot how fun it is.

OK always build more spies. After you have built all the buildings you can and have maxxed out your Command Points with ships, you can build 1 spy a turn on your homeworld, that's if you REALLY need them (i.e to steal merculite missle (the 1st guardian killer ). What I usually do, if I have nothing to build anymore on a planet, is as much population on research as possible, and leave 1 worker - each turn he can make 5 freighters or a spy in a couple of turns. After some significant building tech (auto factories, robo miners, robotic factory, etc) you can pop 1 spy a turn with NO workers & all researchers.

          REMEMBER: steal, steal, steal.

          HOPE THIS HELPS

OFF THE SUBJECT, has anyone else noticed that the computer has no trouble stealing your spy tech but NEVER ends up stealing cheap crap like anti-missle rockets

If you throw a lot of spies into defense then the AI will not steal your tech.

as i love playing with feodal races, spying is a priority. i usually pick +10 at spying, charisma (sometimes it prevents from being attacked) and sometimes telepathy. in hard level a few spies are enough (15) to do the job. i first spy on repulsive races that cannot reach my empire, then on any weaker races (watch the fleet graph!) and at the end, when i have the largest fleet of the galaxy, i spy on everyone. i always leave a few spies hiden in the empires i do not spy to avoid beeing framed. in impossible level, do not expect to steal anything if you have less than 40 spies. always research the upgrades for spies.
