Hi,
I'm the lead of a project called FreeOrion. It is an opensource (GPL) game being created in the spirit of the Master Of Orion series - turn based space strategy games. We are also inspired by other games like the Total War series, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Paradox Entertainment (Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, etc) and more. We are taking elements of these games and producing something new.
Currently we have released version 0.1, which is a playable, but buggy release. We have around 4-6 very talented programmers, but their time commitment varies. We are therefore looking for more programmers to join our team.
If you want to check out our 0.1 release, you can see the release story here:
You can also see a screenshot here:
http://www.artclusta.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=262 (Although this is slightly different to the 0.1 release, and different again from the current CVS)
Here is a thread discussing screen layout with mockups for 0.2:
In particular pages 2 & 3 have mockup images.
To entice you, here are some details:
1. We're using the GG library, a new gui library by one of our coders which is very powerful and follows the slots and signals design of Qt
2. We have a very good codebase built and maintained by talented coders
3. We have a great team of artists, game designers, musicians and programmers to cover all aspects of game development
4. It's an open source game
5. It compiles in Linux, or in windows with Dev-C++ and MSVC (.net, not sure about other versions)
What we're looking for is new programmers to join our team to help speed up development. What we want are talented programmers who are already strong with C++ (not just C). The more you don't know, the more time our programmers have to spend introducing new people instead of programming. So we are looking for people who are competent enough to know how to use CVS, grab a codebase, get it working in their favourite environment, and deal with most troubles themselves.
The GG library has great doxygen documentation. We have design documents for each release, so it's clear where we're heading. You can view the design document we are currently working from here:
You can also view the current programming tasks in the following thread, second last and last posts:
We already have a great team, but we're looking to expand it to help get this game going quicker. If you have any more questions you can post them here, or visit our forums at http://www.artclusta.com/bb
PM me (Tyreth) on the FreeOrion forums if you're interested in joining.
One more favour: please don't announce our project to other news sites or forums. We are trying not to spread news too far until we have a much fuller game for download. First impressions are somewhat important. Thanks!
