Actually, the blank starmap is usually caused by clicking on the ground combat result sitrep link. That is, the sitrep that say something along the line of "we have invaded planet abc 1, we have gained 2 regions."
If you click on the planet name link, it will not bring you to the planet, instead it will give a blank screen with the colour of the sitrep screen background (kinda greyish). If you were to go back to sitrep and press the link again, the blank screen will darken more each time you do this too.
In this state, you'll not be able to access the starmap, but will regain it after hitting turn usually. Sometimes, pressing keyboard keys may even crash the game during the blank screen (usually the "h" key). This is a well known bug actually.
Fortunately, as I have mentioned in another thread, Bhruic is developing his Moo3 Patcher. Among the patches currently available (these are .patch files to be read by the Patcher), there is one that fix this specifically. The fix has been tested and its functionality confirmed, by yours truly. For more information about currently available patches http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...hreadid=114101 and look for my post, and be sure to visit this thread on Atari MOO for up to date info http://www.ina-community.com/forums/...hreadid=383367
