Precisely...at the insistence of my wife, who remains convinced that I'll see my comp copy on the same day as sleet is forecast for Hell.

        The code patch!

Stormhound, emergency information required, please! The fate of the Terran Empire depends on it!

It seems I would have to subscribe to Gameplanet to get the 1.02 MOO3 patch from them. But hopefully the patch will son be mirrored on the Apolyton site? I have asked DanQ about that.

Two questions I also asked him but I would be happy to hear answered by you. The Gameplanet site said that the code patch was not compatible with the data patch. But in one of the threads on this forum it says that the data patch is incorporated in the code patch, which leaves me rather confused! After all, there is no way to disentangle the original data patch, which surely most of us must have incorporated, without re-installing, is there?

Also, can we continue the game we are presently embarked on having patched MOO3 to 1.02? I am now on turn 820 of the present game and think I have some way to go yet! I would be loathe to 'topple my king', as they do in chess, and start again!

        Live long and prosper.

          Re: what's compatible with what

I don't know. I don't work there any more, but that sounds kind of strange to me. Perhaps it's more a case of the code patch required some more table changes, which is certainly not unexpected...after all, they were externalizing more data, and since they included new tables, I don't anticipate a problem.

However, it's been widely reported for some time that the code patch will "break" old savegames...so don't patch until you've finished whatever you want to finish.

Many thanks for the reply, Stormhound. I was counting on your advice.

Bwaaaaaaaaa! 'The code patch will break saved games!' I guess I wont install then for a while. (Maybe just as well. Perhaps in a 'patched' MOO3 Universe, I would really get creamed!)

Why is the introduction of this code patch so confusing? I have never heard of a second patch being incompatible with a first? I am not techie but it seems to me that what is being suggested by the data patch not being compatible with the code patch is that you have to reinstall the game then patch in the code patch, leaving out the data patch? I could be wrong! I just dunno! Does anyone?

I install the code patch it put in new data files and it back
up the old one but all mod 's you have install are delete and all of your savegames are move to the backup folder.

The reason the second patch might be incompatible with the first, as I mentioned, is that in the second patch there could be further changes/additions to the data tables in the .mob files. If any table has been added, the program would expect to find that table, and likely bomb if it couldn't find it. The added data would be included with the second patch.

The "incompatible" part means that any data tables based purely on the first patch would not work, because they wouldn't have the new required elements. So you couldn't just load up your old mods...you'd have to get new ones based on the new data tables. Frankly, if you haven't done any modding, it won't make a rat's bum worth of difference, except that the old save games won't work.
If I'd known then what I know now, I'd never have done all the stuff that led me to what I know now...

Stormhound, I hope you are reading this now and around at the weekend! Have you read the thread on how difficult the 'beta patch' is to install? I hope that the finished patch will be less of a headache! I have never come across this before - a patch so complicated to install!
