I usually play the stock characters first then later I start tweaking them. I usually love high research and production (and a rich HW).

Rich HW is especially nice if you're playing a race that is juiced up on the mining/industry side anyway.
I've been experimenting with Cynoids that have been maxed out with industry/mining (including rich HW) and given a tech boost. I sacrificed the economic picks and a diplomacy level (I think).
Seems to be working quite well, some of my planets seem to be producing a little slowly though, i'll have to figure out why.
