  • It requires a 600 MHz? Guess I'm out of luck

I have a 400 MHz computer with an 8 M video card. I can't afford a new computer now, and won't be able to for the forseeable future, so GalCiv is out of my league, I suppose.

Has anybody tried to play the game with a less than 600 MHz machine?

Another poster said he was on a 450 MHz machine, and said it seemed to run ok (but there were a few "bugs" he said were attributed to the slow processor speed).

Hey Antonin, hang in there. I have a 600mhz and plan to get the game. I also saw the post from the guy with the 450.

I think in our case, we will probably have to settle for smaller maps and less civs.

Civ3 runs great for me as long as I stay on standard and smaller maps.

I'm on an 850 (256MB RAM) with no problems (the jump from 600 to 850 isn't *that* much). Of course, I always kill any other processes running so that the game gets all the processing power it can.

There's also an option in the game to keep it from running in the background, in other words, it can multi-thread some stuff to minimize wait times, but you need more processing power for that. I'm just guessing here, but I think if you turn that off, you won't have any problems in the game itself except waiting a bit longer for turns to play out, etc.

One of the beta testers has played with a machine that was well below the minimum specifications. IIRC the machine was 300 MHz.

They said they were able to play on the largest galaxy size. Some of the video didn't work as well, but the game was playable.

Out of curiousity, is there any option for customizing the interface, i.e., swapping the mouse button functions?

Not that I can see...and I don't recall a hotkeys setup screen, either.

From what I recall, people who said they had less than 600 MHz didn't have a problem playing the game except on the later turns on a large galaxy. A good deal of the wait between turns for a game like Civ 3 is gone from this game because the AI is working while you play your turn.

You can play the game on much less.......400mhz is fine, but you won't be able to play on the larger galaxies, because of the amount of ships that are flying around. The pathfinding algorithm for the ships drains the system resources.................

I'm playing with a 450, 256MB of RAM. I haven't tried anything over a small galaxy. Right now I'm having a problem with it crashing to desktop but I don't think it has to do with a lack of hardware prowess.

I'm playing on a 500MHz Athlon, 256Mb RAM, on a Medium galaxy, absolutely no slowdowns, no CTD
On a sidenote, it took me 16+ hrs !!! to d/l the full thing on DSL, it should have been 4 but server was awfully overcrowded, but everything went smoothly without any problem, at all ...

I'm pretty worried now, all this ain't normal with software... LOL
So don't hesitate Antonin, GET IT !

                        Nice.

My problem is my SO hogs my Wintel box to play SMAC. My other computers are way too slow and I can't use the server.

This is going to be a tough one.

I have a four-year-old AMD K6 266MHz, 32MB RAM, 2MB video and I'm still gonna give it a shot, by golly I'll report when I have the results. It'll be a few weeks, though. The available dollars are a bit short

Probably near to SimCity 4 where if you turn off all the beautiful graphic option you only need a 100 MHz computer, but if you also want turn on the "play the game" option you need a P4 2,6 GHz

gwillybj, the demo should be out by then, so you can try it without risking the $35-$45.
