When I get a message from another race, the messager often claims to be sending a gift, but does not say what that gift is! Or am I missing it? Also, is there a strategy book out for this game?

Much of the text in the diplomacy interchanges is "flavor text" in that it has no impact on the actual game, but it gives you an idea of what that AI player thinks of you.
I have had an AI give me ships before to help fight someone they didn't like, in that case I had to scroll around on the map to find the ships outside one of his planets.
