  • Miniturization Request

Has anybody definitively seen miniturization work? I swear it's broken, but haven't done enough testing to prove it.

Or, I completely mis-understand how it's supposed to work.

I think it's supposed to work by increasing the space (but not the hit points) of the hull classes. So, I wrote down that my Medium Hull had 38 spaces, then I researched the 2nd level of Miniturization, went back to the ship designer, looked at the Hull size and it still had 38 spaces. Shouldn't it have gotten bigger?

And, to top it all off, the Ion Engine and the Phasor had both increased size by one.

I actually understand that last one, where components are sized based on the size hull they are going on (thus, an Ion Engine is bigger for bigger hulls, makes sense) I agree with whoever made the comment that makes less sense for a weapon.

But I thought the hull should have gotten bigger. What did I miss?

Has anybody done any kind of careful analysis and seen it work?

    Thanks
Where are we going? And why are we in this handbasket?

I haven't done a careful analysis, but I've seen it work. Maybe some miniturization techs are bugged or some hulls are.

Regarding bigger hulls requiring larger components I disagree. Sure, engines and life support needs to be larger, but weapons? There's no reason whatsoever for them to increase size with hull size. There's also no reason for it to go up with miniturization, after all it's supposed to shrink components, not enlarge them. Sure, I agree that making hulls larger is the best way to implement miniturization (to make every level count, not lost in rounding), but don't increase component sizes with it.

I always thought that minaturization made ship parts cost less points.....That makes logical sense to me cause they make the parts smaller. Never really paid attention to how it actually works though.

I've heard that the second tier of miniaturization techs does not do anything, and I'm thinking that it might be intentional - the little news brief that comes with the technology says something about "Hyperion corporation insists that it really does work" and then it says something about "In other news, Hyperion stock has fallen 25%". Maybe in testing miniaturization was too powerful at higher levels so they made some intermediary techs in the path that do nothing.

What difference does it make? If you increase hull size by 25% and component sizes by 5%, isn't that pretty much the same as increasing hull size by 20% and component size not at all?
