I don't remember the AI in Ascendancy being stupid. Perhaps I was less smart way back then.

AI doesn't refit it's ships. In Ascendancy, that means it doesn't matter what else it does, its dead as soon as the human gets ship refit.
It also doesn't defend itself well at all.
It doesn't do basic strategic expansion/consolidation.
But if you use DosBox, you won't have any problems playing it, *with sound*.
