  • One dead Private Forum

GalCiv is such a great game. Where the heck is everybody? This site is packed full of literally thousands of gamers...why is this forum on life support and the private forum dang near dead?

This game deserves more from the Apolyton Empire!!

The www.galciv.com forum is more active. Even if it isn't as functional as Apolyton boards, I think that it is draining what is left of discussions.
Go GalCiv, go! Go Society, go!

I left a solicitation thread there about this forum and it got a big fat 0 for replies.

Perhaps having some type of usable editor will liven discussion some.

Fact is there are more people around the official forum. There's little reason to discuss a lot of things here.
The editor would help but I dare not use it yet. The last beta was very good at crashing my computer.

I don't really touch the official forums personally... I tend to be pretty picky about forum layouts, and that one just erks me.

I agree with that! So any ideas on how to promote 'Poly's version of the GalCiv discussion?

I enjoy playing a small to medium game every once in a while the way the game stands in v1.13. At this size it's about 3-8 hrs of game play with some distractions and interruptions in real life that make it about a week or more in real time to finish a game. Anything larger I've had a hard time finishing, since it becomes such a micro nightmare and very boring. To actually finish a game at this size took me prolly 20+ hrs of game time and well over a month in real time. For me there's just to many other more enjoyable things to do with my hour or so of gaming time I have each day.

I play on challenging or tough level and here are some observations on the game.

                1) Wojit makes a good point about the galciv forums...if they seperated into some sort of categories atleast would be a big plus. Simply asking a gameplay question there and you get a do a search reply from someone. Yea whatever...doing that on their unorganized forums and weeding through everything and there goes your gaming for that day...no thanks.
                2) No zoom lvls is a big minus especially in larger maps.
                3) Although some claim the AI is really good, I've found it abit lame and surrenders without a fight or unable to handle culture bombing against it. Many times the minors build more trade goods and wonders than the other majors and are stronger. Maybe on the higher lvls this is different, but all the difficulty lvls should offer a decent game play for the story line.
4)Graphics are fairly outdated for a 03 game and nothing to hold you to the game especially with the lack of zoom feature.
5)Combat is basically some number crunching modified by tech and pre game abilities chosen, so nothing real tactical or special here.
                6)Tech tree....well it's a bit of a nightmare really.

I didn't try out MOO3, but I think Galciv prolly is a bit overrated. Peops looking for a game in this area grabbed onto Galciv since MOO3 was so lame. Hopefully the expansion can improve on some of the weaknesses of the game.

Indeed the official forums layout is ugly, searching there is quite hard, but the strategy section is still useful.

                  2) No zoom lvls is a big minus especially in larger maps.
Yes, but I always found that the minimap was enough for all zooming I could dream of. Plus you can switch from normal to tactical map.
                  3) Although some claim the AI is really good, I've found it abit lame and surrenders without a fight or unable to handle culture bombing against it. There are 2 points here.
-The ai can't recognize culture bombing for what it is. It also has some trouble making the difference between a hidden attempt at alpha striking them out of existence and a ship defending a starbase in a nearby sector. It's still better than in most games imho.
-Difficulty levels make difference, but not beyond tough if I remember well. Map size is more important in your case, though. Minors are always very minor on bigger maps. On small/medium, not to say tiny, the minors can be important players, but I can't see what's wrong with that.
4)Graphics are fairly outdated for a 03 game and nothing to hold you to the game especially with the lack of zoom feature.
I can't say that bothers me.
5)Combat is basically some number crunching modified by tech and pre game abilities chosen, so nothing real tactical or special here.
Yes, this is very simple. A bit more variety would be welcome, but if you use anti matter missiles, you will start using some tactics: You must protect a fleet of AMMs with one or two dummy ships in front of them for instance.
                  6)Tech tree....well it's a bit of a nightmare really.
Yes. The lack of a global view of the tech tree in-game, or even of a part of the tree, is a pain.

It's been ages since I've visited the official forum, but if it is still the same as it was 10 months ago that's still too cumbersome for me. Apolyton has spoiled me

Anyway I'm still running the original version. Are the new patches really necessary. I see no issues running out of the box. I could be wrong though. Anyone?
