Did anyone else use to play this back in the day?

I didn't really, only with my brother and we never actually got into combat. But I dreamed of it.

Well, it just got quite assessable. Someone rewrote VGA planets 3 into something you can play in a browser, for free.

    Here it is:

For those who don't know, there are 11 empires based off of ones found in popular media... and you fight to become the top empire in the galaxy. It was PBEM back in the day, on this site the standard game setup is to play 1 turn every two days.

It is sort of the 'give commands, when turn processes, commands all happen at once' type.

Anyways, I am playing one game and will probably continue to play one game (so probably 2-3 per year).

I did. It was one of my favorite games, the main problem was trying to get 11 players fully in a game. I don't think I have time for that anymore though, especially in later turns when it takes a few hours.

We had 10 players fully into my current game, but one left for some reason a few turns ago (had the second strongest military at the time, didn't have an ally though).

My experience is that things move better with the new UI.

Is there still a simulator for simming battles?

          Yes. Inside the game.

Improvements include map tools (to find distances, connections at warp9, and so on), and a tool to look at the information in previous turns (of yours).

Ooh, sounds nice. I had bought the laminated map and drew all warp 9 conenctions between planets for an easy reference.
