Got bored of the combat by Act III. Everything is pretty much a come down from the end of Act II imo. Not one of Bioware's best games.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

No. He is the definite high point among the companions.

I however cannot stand Varric. He is the weakest written of the companions.

"ooh look at me, I'm so cool and moody and hardass and clever."

No he's not. Nothing he has said has made me laugh or chuckle or smile. He's boring, his lines are ill-written, and I would never have taken him into the Deep Roads if the game hadn't forced me to take him.

And all of his cut scenes are insufferable. "Oh, I'm varric and I'm being questioned and I don't care at all." Boring. "Oh I'm varric and I'm saving you from a pickpocket, but then I demand 50 gold to sign on with my brother for an expedition." Do I care?

Anyone ... even Carver is better than him... because Carver at least is better written--he's a twit younger brother, but he has an interesting story.

I am not happy with the terribly weak storyline in the game either.

Just one minor point of many: "I need 50 gold to get out of the city for a time... so why don't I go about making a HUGE demonstration of my MAGICAL powers for everyone so they know about me REALLY WELL" before I sign on to the expedition. If I have 50 *$**ing gold pieces I can do a lot better things with my money than sign on as a 1/3 partner with 2 shady dwarves. Whole thing sounded like a terrible con-job.

I am happy with a lot of the techincal fixes (minimap, less loot management, etc). However

Still haven't figured out how to craft though- I don't like carrying aroudn the materials so I just keep stashing them back in the chest (in Act I).

The gameplay has been improved significantly (with the exception that if you are playing on a CRT screen you have to sit 1 foot from the screen and squint to read anything-- I have no idea what armor or weapons I have. I think I sold half the Blood Dragon armor set by accident but can't be certain because I couldn't actually read what the armor was.) I also really appreciate the simplicity of the combat.

You shouldn't have any crafting materials in your inventory. Instead you just gradually build them up and they unlock new recipes. And you craft by going to the crafting tables and spending a tiny amount of money (a few silvers) to buy whatever potion or rune you have the ingredients for. Ingredients are never expended though.
