SM is the third. Basically it's a much much better and expanded version of AoW2.."An archaeologist is the best husband a women can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her." - Agatha Christie
"Non mortem timemus, sed cogitationem mortis." - Seneca

My recollection is that SM was an add on to AoW2, but you did not need AoW2 to play it. Like some at the time such as DLR. DLR was an add on for Rise of Heroes, but it was stand alone.
I still have SM and have not installed it in years as I never even finished the first campaign scenario. AoW I played every map I could find on the net.

Shadow Magic was 2.5 basically, a standalone upgrade with pretty similar gameplay and a few additions. It was more balanced though and by far the most polished of the three games. I can understand your nostalgia for the first game, but for a new player playing anything other than SM first looks odd to me.

Not nostalgia, I just did not care for AoW2 or SM. I bought them both and never could get interested. I must have lost AoW2 and the guides and manuals some where in the past.
I am a big fan of Homm and Warlords and Disciples and expected to like AoW2 and SM, but just did not click.
Anyway I thought there was a true AoW3 and I missed it. I would try it, if they make one. Not trying to put one over another as it is just my taste and not germane to others.

The main issue for the many years i've been looking for the expansions/later games has been the cost, as pointed out in the post re their price on ebay/amazon.
The first game i picked up on a budget label for £5 - pleanty of fun for the money imho.
Some sites for info on the games:
The Age of Wonders series consists of 4X turn-based strategy games in a fantasy setting, with Age of Wonders: Planetfall being the only sci-fi spin-off title.
A special game series imho

Yeah, I have Homm3 complete. Well I have the platinum version as well. Where are they located, I may have already played them. I got pretty much everything from the old site, before it closed.
I have also loaded many scenarios from Celestial Heavens. Some other places over time as well. It got to the point that I have a spreadsheet to track the names. I even had all the Homm3 Chronicles.

BTW I was looking on my HTML page of games and saw that AoW is on my runner up list, just after all the ones I call my all time favorites. AoW2 is on my tried, but could not get into section and SM is on never really got past the install phase.
I probably need to move it to my had hopes section.

I shouldn't be saying this, but if it's that hard to find it, why don't you just steal it from the net... I mean it's not like the developers are still going to be making their money with their old games right.."An archaeologist is the best husband a women can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her." - Agatha Christie
"Non mortem timemus, sed cogitationem mortis." - Seneca

I thought AoW had the better campaign, but I didn't play much of any of the campaigns to be honest.
As far as the total look/extras/is good.
