For those that don't know, Vanguard is an MMORPG that was developed by Sigil, but now run by Sony Online Entertainment. The game was quite hyped in the beginning (early alpha) but as beta progressed, it was obvious that the game suffered from massive problems. Nonetheless, roughly 200,000 people bought the game at release, but more than half of those were gone after their free month expired.
Yours truly stayed on a little longer, but in the end, I too gave up. The game was just not finished. It was released more than a year prematurely, IMHO.
The game had potential, though. Many areas of the game were quite well thought out, and it had a fresh perspective on quite a number of MMO concepts. Thus, as far as I am concerned, it was never totally off the scope.
Late september, I took advantage of an offer of a free month, to get back into the game. And I haven't really looked back since. The problems that were so rampant at release are gone. The CTDs, the glitches, the unfinished, unpolished feel. Ladies and gentlemen....we have a gem now
I am enjoying myself immensely.
One problem persists, though. Lack of a player-base. What good is an online game, when you can find no players to play with? So here comes a shameless plug for the free trial at http://vanguard.station.sony.com/ If you are an MMO player, and don't particularly mind that the game you are playing was released almost 2 years ago, then I am sure that Vanguard has everything you need
Ok, ok....I know the above sounded a bit too much like a commercial, but it is just so frustrating to know to be playing the greatest MMO ever, and then have no-one to play with
I'll stop now
