  • First Spore Review Out!

It's from a magazine called PC Powerplay. There's scans, but I'm not sure if I should link to 'em.

They gave the thing a 9 out of ten.

    Pros:

    Limitless custom content
    Varied types of gameplay
    No more Sims #1!

    Cons:
    Not deep enough
    All about the creator
    Designed for Non-gamers

Overall: Awesome in scope, mainstream in depth.

    ---

Here's some bits from the review, and my commentary.

+ The different phases of the game, by themselves, are just weaker versions of whatever game they came from. The reviewer expected the Creature Stage, for example, to be as in-depth as Diablo 2 (My response: the hell?). The reviewer claims there's not a lot of tactical-ness in any Phase, only choosing which attacks/social things to use.

+ The above comment doesn't apply if you start at the Cell Phase and work your way up to the Space Phase. (my response: I dont think a lot of people'll be skipping whole sections of the game...).

+ One of the problems with the various editors is that some of the widgets and doo-dads in them don't all give +1 or +2 to something, which makes it suck unless you're into, you know, [i]creating/i] things. (My response: it wouldn't surprise me if he's kinda right about this one. With The Sims, more more things I could spend my time creating, the less I wanted to create anything and just play.)

+ Spore was not created for the hardcore gamer. They call it a "horrible truth." People who want infinte depth, and not infinite content, will be dissapointed by Spore.

Bottom line: I'm not usually one of those "I hated this review", but I do think the review is a bit... wonky. But it's a Maxis game that'll do well despite "hardcore" fans, so maybe that's it.

****, I was hoping for depth. Otherwise it's just a neat toy.

Wright, you are good, but you haven't added depth to your games since Sim City 2000.

Which has essentially always been his motto.

You expected depth? Really? Did you really expect the creature phase to, say, be as deep as Diablo? The Civ stage as deep as Civ IV?

Not THAT deep, but at least some pretty fair depthness.

I agree with ES: a "toy" is Wright's goal essentially, and has been his trend forever. Just like the Sims, they give you "mini-goals" to nudge you in the direction of building up your stuff, but in the grand scheme of things, the ultimate goal is to play the game, rather than achieve anything in particular. I think "toy" is also the precise terminology Wright has used in the past (definitely in relation to Sims, don't recall about spore, because I haven't followed it really).

I am really looking foward to seeing how well this game does. Obviously, EA is going to go Sims on it, and try to release eleventy billion expansion packs. But I wonder if Spore will match (beat?) Sims' success.

PC Gamer UK has also reviewed Spore, giving it a 91/100. There's scans online, if you want to read the whole thing. I don't have a lot of time to do so right now, as I'm heading to work in a couple minutes.

The only glaringly negative thing in the review is that he mentions that the game plays the other space-faring races as *******s. He wound up in a situation in which multiple alien races declared war on him (ones he hadn't even met, some that didn't give him enough warning that he was entering their territory). They would attack his colonies (and thus, reduce his income signifcantly), which prevented him from striking back / paying for peace. He says the difficulty is a little weird: Easy isn't Easy, Hard isn't Hard.

He also mentions that, during the creature phase, other creatures you socialize with and become friends with tend to become bloodthirsty in battle. No matter how much you'll tell your friends to back off from a fight, they fight until the end.
