It's not a like a French strategy magazine (translated into English) that is just now covering Silent Hunter 4 (not even a strategy game) and Civilization 4 in two months (almost three years past release) made by people who call themselves "digital news agents" would be worth anything anyway.

Do you people like making pdf's of magazine covers and attaching them to viruses? (http://www.digitalnewsagent.com/)

Do you know something about underground bunkers that rest of us don't?

Wow, quite a paranoid attitude! So yes the mag is provided with the mean of an executable, but have you found any trojan or malware inside it? I don't think so. All games are in EXE format, so where is the problem with Cyberstratege that you don't have with the others applications?

The EXE format is because there is a viewer included for the mag, so that someone can't just register a copy and then spread it over the P2P networks. That's all and nothing else. I downloaded and installed it fine, and so far my anti-viruses (I have two) have not said anything

Cyberstratege is a very good printed mag providing since several years strategy articles, including in depth analysis of many TBS games.

Should the initial reaction not be to rejoyce that our (too) small community of turn base gamers get a new media of expression?

Why this hateful bashing? Because I don't see anything else in these unfounded accusations.

It just seems a strange business model - the demo is free and from reading about it on the webpage a collection of older, already published articles. If you want casual readers to buy/browse then put it in safe and universal format - pdf.

I really can't understand why the sample is being released this way? A bit of publicity or word of mouth on P2P for something you're giving away is bad thing? I think that's why everyone is paranoid.

I dont load a game unless I have reason to trust the source.

And of course this isnt a game, its something that could easily have been in a PDF. and no business reason we can figure out why it wouldnt have been.

Now if folks here who posted on this site a long time tell me theyve run it and no problem, I would try it. But I must say your approach is stupid.

And no, its NOT paranoid to be wary of executables. Its wise.

Isnt it a sub sim? I tend to group sims alongside strat games - heavily overlapping markets. I have no problem with them including it.

Cyberstratege can be trusted in my opinion. I've been reading them for a while, checking www.cyberstratege.com very often, so I wouldn't mind executing the exe. For a demo, I confess I think using an exe is not brilliant. Giving 8 pages as a pdf would have been a better idea, and then allowing subscriptions to get the exe, but that's not what they did.
But then, I buy the paper magazine and don't really care for an online version, English or French (the French online version has been out for some time).

No way I'm opening an .exe to read a couple of articles. If they had wanted my interest, they'd better give me a .pdf or something. Sounds fishy the whole thing really.

Indeed. I can think of two reasons why this demo is released as an exe, and neither of them are good.

The first is to transmit viruses or some other underhanded trickery. Not good, obviously. I am leaning away from this as the most likely choice, which leaves:

Second is that this is a legitimate, if misguided, attempt to "control how [a sample of the magazine] spreads". This implies that these strategy writers have missed some very obvious facts when planning their distribution strategy, such as not threatening security when you are an unknown quantity or wanting your demo to spread as far as possible. On the upside, this option is rich in irony.

I agree with Pocus' assessment that there is too much paranoia in this thread; however I disagree with his assessment of which group this paranoia is attributed to.

                        EDIT: Typo

                            This thread deserves topping because?

I am not going to execute any files from people whom I don't even know, let alone trust.

Solver topped it because he wanted everyone to see his macho banning of Wiglaf.

                                Why did Wiggy get banned?

If the moderators spent less time banning innocent civilians and more time...oh, **** it.
