  • the stupidity of blizzard's downloading scheme

so i decided to give wow a try, see what the world is playing that least few years

    1) go to the trial site, download an installer
    2) installer downloads around 500mb and installs the trial
    3) 10 days later the trial expires and i decide to get a real account
    4) "you're @#$@# says blizzard. i now have to download the full game, cause the trial has very little stuff. can i still play on the trial? it's all online, right? no way, your account is now a full one says the trial, you can play here
    5) so i wait 3-4 days for the 3.9GB download to end
    6) installer runs and runs and runs.... then it finally says done, click "the play wow" button!
    7) oh wait there's small patch. ah just 2mb. download and install
    8) oh wait there's small patch. ah just 5mb. download and install
    9) oh wait there's small patch. ah just 292mb!!!!
    are you kidding me?!?!?

It is pretty painful the first time you install it. It's like the game is teasing you.

There were 10+ major patches (plus quite a few small ones) in the original WoW and so far 5 major patches for the expansion plus several other small ones. Not sure how many of those they included in the original download (probably a lot of them).

The trial versions have a LOT of limitations and restrictions on them, that's why they require a new regular account.

I'd be curious if the reduced requirements from levels 20-60 for levelling require the 2.4 expansion patch or not. If it does, that alone might make it worth getting the expansion now - you'd save 30% of your time levelling to level 60.

FYI, while you could be able to get into some of the early vanilla WoW instances (like Deadmines if alliance and Scarlet Monastery) - as you start to approach level 60, expect to get into less and less of them as most people ignore them and just try to get to level 58 so they can get to Outland and its much better gear.

Statements like this are a good reason not to play the game in the first place

I have never had it taken longer to download than 6 hours.

If I re-install WoW now, I would have to download approx 1.5gb of patch data, IIRC. I suppose that is because I bought the game the day it was released.

Well, it builds up the suspension though..

I suppose I should not tell you about my experience with the Age of Conan beta tech test over the weekend. After downloading a 12 gig total set of install files and installing the program (took up 18 gigs on another hard drive after installing), patching required a 4 gig download. For all of this, I got to play for a max of 3 hours.

If it takes several days for a 3.9GB download, you shouldn't be playing WoW in the first place, you don't have the bandwidth... or they don't, which is just as bad.

1GB/day translates to 40mb/hr give or take, or 670k/min, or around 10kBps (80kbps). That's third world speed as far as I'm concerned...

The patch that made levelling easier was back in november 2007 I believe. What are asking exactly?

edit: or are you wondering if you need the s pak for that? Im sure its across the board game wise, whether you have the x pak or not.
