God, every single game recommended in this thread is awful. You people really know how to pick em. Deus Ex? Really? It's 2008, I'd have hoped people's balls would have dropped by now.

It's about single player for me. If the game has got good multiplayer as well, so much the better, but it's not the reason I'm getting it.
Have you tried Stalker? The game is one year old, has a good atmosphere and interesting environments. It's not a "kill everything moving" game and killing people is not as easy as in most FPS games (taking on multiple enemies can be quite difficult)

The game does have a multiplayer mode, but there's nothing special about it, just the usual deathmatch and team deathmatch (and a third type not many plays)

That's a very differing selection of games, actually. You'll probably like some a lot and others not too much, depending on your tastes in FPS, they're really different.

That's basically it. You pay them by credit card, they give you a link to download the installation file, you do, then run the file. The D2D versions are different than the retail versions in that there is no disk check, and this means the patches need to be different as well, but in this particular case it doesn't matter. The GOTY edition is the final patched version. I do think you miss out on the soundtrack disk that comes with the hard copy of the game, but you can extract all the music from the game with the right software if you want.

Alright, that sounds much better than Steam.

They all seem to feature an intense atmosphere, or am I mistaken?

They do, but those are different atmospheres, too. CoD4 has the modern warfare atmosphere, Stalker is more of a post-apocalyptic thing, FEAR is a horror atmosphere. The gameplay of all games also differs rather considerably IMO.

"One Must Fall" - DOS abandonware simplistic 2D H2H but endlessly entertaining for some reason.

I've actually been sucked into playing that Basketball MMORPG, Cyberdunk. Not since Civ2 have I been so obsessed with figuring out algorithms and putting together innovative strategies.

Finished Beyond Good & Evil: loved it. This was the kind of game I was hoping to catch up with.

Began playing Doom 3. Doesn't seem all that bad. There's some annoying stuff, but it's very scary.

It's scary for the first hour. Then the 'oh look I'm unable to hold both a gun and a flashlight and that cupboard up there looks like it might have zombies that might come out at me if I walk past it' gameplay gets rather dull.

The only time I got the "dreads" in Doom 3 was when I'd come to a large lit area, and I just knew there was going to be a massive fight as soon as I stepped into the center. The rest I didn't find scary at all, it only went for startling.

Serious Sam and Serious Sam second encounter are masterpieces. Serious Sam 2's not as good unfortunately. I would recommend the first two.

Great action, great humour, replayability (it's repetitive oldskool fragging but it never gets annoying throughout the game), sweet weapons. And the co-op multiplay is a lot of fun. I used to play co-op races (first team to finish the entire game wins) back in the days I called in at LAN parties. One of my best gaming memories of all time
