  • What will warfare look like in Spore?

How deep will the combat system be? What will Soren’s influence on this? How limited will you be in the number of vehicles? Will there be room for real strategy or at least tactics? Will you be able to use air bombardment?

Will units that win combat get anything like the veteran status of old civ games?

The micro-strategy of Tribe is replaced in Civilization by more of a macro-strategy approach; although we would point out that combat was more like an RTS than a turn based strategy game. It's a straightforward and rudimentary take on strategy gaming, but Maxis are being careful not to alienate some of the more casual gamers that will no doubt be attracted to Spore. This goes a long way in explaining why there's a cutesier feel to the various game phases rather than the serious, in-depth features of a hardcore RPG/RTS/4X strategy game.

                  Cell:
You get a couple of attacking bits, such as bite, spit and spike to attack with. Combat is very simple, such as swim up and twist back and forth spiking the opponent till they die.

Omnivores get a very cool unique attack ability.

                  Creature:
You add bits to your creature which allow different types of attack. Each attach type can occur once in XXX seconds. You get bite, charge, strike and spit (poison etc). They come in 5 different levels.

So depending on the bits on your creature you could have bite-1, charge-2, strike-5, spit-0. Anything at level 0 means you don't have that ability at all.

So attacking is really charge, then use the other three abilities till the opponent is dead. They are doing the same to you.

                  Tribe/Civ:
Standard RTS style of combat. Build heaps of attach units, rush, rinse, repeat.

                  Space:
I haven't played enough of Space to comment.
