I didnt buy it this year. I got 07, and it will do for my needs untill they make more serious improvements. But you really shouldnt be buying these games for PC anymore, IMO.

the Madden games are pretty much the entire reason I ever bought a PS2. I would buy about two games a year and one was always Madden. Loved 'em. Awesome. Even though there's been a failure to improve since about '05, I've stuck with it. Not any more. It was my own mistake running out and buying '08 for PS3 based on one mildly positive review, but that giant steaming turd of a game has probably put me off Madden forever. There are simple things (like IR) that have been broken for about a decade with no fix. Instead of fixing that they insist on further breaking the gamplay: jump snap, inability to thow OVER coverage, etc, absolute complete garbage franchise player progression at stat simming...

Yeah, once upon a time Madden was a must-buy for me. Strictly every-other year (mostly for budget reasons).

Sadly, it has become a wait-and-see game.

A friend of mine told me pretty much the same thing about '08, it's crap. He said the only thing it had going for it was that it supported wide screen resolutions.

Well it's not as if 2007 was a good Madden game either...

How did they manage to break a game that is essentially the same game as every previous year

I think 07 was a "complete rework" of the previous titles, being how it was the first one for the "next-gen" consoles (I know this was the case with NHL, I assume the same holds for Madden). All this means is they are basically cutting down features, so they can re-introduce them again on the new platforms, and keep the appeal of rebuying the game every year up. It also means they rewrote substantial portions of code, which in the rushed environment of a yearly title means lots of hacks, workarounds and bugs.

So, to make a long story short... It was the same game every year up til 06, and then due to the advent of new consoles they rewrote a bunch of **** under the hood, and so now need another few years to iron out the bugs and shortcuts they took.

I've said it many times before here, EA Sports games are a complete waste of time and money if you're looking for lasting gameplay. They're all about selling their games on presentation and licences and mostly have been since the first EA Sports games.

Every FIFA Soccer game I've played hasn't lasted longer than a week because you crack the AI within hours, then spend the next few days unlocking all the lame **** they included to drag out the experience, whilst simutaneously trying to ignore the horrible laggy controls that come with every FIFA game.

Whereas the Pro Evolution Soccer game last year I played solidly for months just offline because the gameplay and learning curve was that good. Then played 6 more months online. Sadly the latest PES has turned to **** this year with the transition to next-gen plus the rush to meet yearly deadline vovan mentions.
