  • Panzer General Style Game

I've been playing Commander - Europe at War, which came out a few months ago. If you liked Panzer General like me then you'll love this game. It's like PG on a massive scale with the whole of Europe, research, production and more.

The UI is great, easy to pick up and play, the graphics are great for teh type of game, and the AI is good enough with the difficulty levels to give a real challenge, but after a while you want a real opponent to give you a more interesting challenge.

There are not enough people playing it yet though so its tough to find a multiplayer opponent so why not check it out and maybe there will be some more people to play online

It's also got some pretty rave reviews looking at the list on the page below.

    Check it out at www.slitherine.com/games/ceaw/

PG is an operational/tactical scale game, IIUC, which PG2 clarified into a tactical scale game. Are you saying this is a game that allows tactical level play, but on a map that includes the entire continent? Or is it a WW2 grand strategy game, a la HOI, and the only thing it has in common is that its a WW2 strategy game?

It's more the look and feel is like PG rather than it being the same type of game. The units are more generic as its on a Corp level and covers the European theatre in one map, but it gave me the same feeling of ease of play that I got from PG and the addictive gameplay. The reviewers probably do a better job of describing it than me - heres the reviews from the games website:

Unrated - Wargamer.com: "Commander: War in Europe is a stone gas of a game, a real sweetheart title that should woe new multitudes to the wargaming genre just as Panzer General did in days of yore."
92% Armchair General Review : "As a complete package, Commander – Europe at War, is a crowd pleaser."
80% PALGN Review : "It's easy to get into, deep, addictive and immensely satisfying"
85% 5 Star : "Commander Europe at War is a much appreciated breath of fresh air"
88% Out of Eight Review : "Commander: Europe at War would be very near the top of the grand strategy list."
80% Ace Games : "I prefer action games, yet I still very much enjoyed this one. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to invade Edinburgh and crush those Allies once and for all!"
81% Gamershall : German language review - gives 10/10 for multiplayer and UI design!
70% Warphammer : Great Spanish language review.
3* Killer Betties : "Commander: Europe at War is the latest such game on this topic, and quite a game it is."

I've seen this before. It is HOI with hexes. I have always wanted to play PG/HOI hybrid. Two levels of combat, a strategic turn followed by a tactical combat where ever foces came into contact.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

Not really. I find the EU/HOI style games deep but pretty heavy going. Commander is much easier to get in to and just feels fun. You should check it out so we can get some people for multiplayer

Well, in PG you are on a tactical level map with a Corps level force with regiment (most call them battalions but they are regiments) sized units in hexes.

In HOI you play on a stategic (world map) woth division level units inside geographic areas (Warsaw, Georgia, Sicily, etc,).

In the game from the OP, you are playing on a strategic level map with division level units with the geographic areas being hexes vice authentic regions. So basically HOI with hexes.

There is nothing wrong with that, using hexes vice arbitrary region sizes actually adds realism. However what I want is something that alows corps leve combat on the small scale and strategic movement on the large scale.

basic look of dozens (if not hundreds) of hex based, TBS PC wargames, made from the 1980s to recent years, which in turn are directly descended from the hex based board games the flourished from the 1950s through the 1970's.

corps level for the entire European Theater - wow.

Probably takes a while to play one turn, I imagine

Eh, about as long as a late stage civilization game I'd imagine.
