BTW, Jon, could you help with something else?

I was checking out quartertothree on something, and note that you post there, and also that Soren posts there from time to time.

One of the more prolific posters on this forum said some really nasty things about qto3, and about Tom Chick not too long ago, when Halo3 came out. Wonder if youd be willing to join in setting the record straight?

On the subject that the site can hold a candle in the number of "industry professionals" working in the console gaming industry as compared to other sites like Beyond3D.

To me, it seems to be a PC gaming niche, leaning towards strategy PC gaming.

Well, it's certainly not a technical forum by any means, but I'd say the distribution is pretty even between discussion on PC and console games. There's certainly a higher proportion of PC and strategy game fans there than sites like NeoGAF, though, which tends to lean towards the console side.

Do NOT play hearts of iron 2(or expansions). It will break your heart.

Unless you have a QUAD core and 4 gigs of ram, the game becomes unplayable and no, I am not exaggerating.

Fantastic game, but the game gradually slows down the longer you play, till it becomes unplayable. You can play short term games of a year or a few months... but the fun stuff, a multi year or decade campaign, becomes unplayable as time goes on.

My argentina had conquered all of south america, the axis and the allies were in a 3 year stalemate thanks to my help(I sided with the axis). "Fortress Europe" had nothing on "fortress south america" which was heavily fortified heh! I was about to prepare to invade panama and sweep through central america to hit the U.S.... but a single day would take upwards of 10 minutes :/ game unplayable.

Oh, yes you are. I have played HoI2 on a Pentium4 2 GHz, 512 MB RAM without problems. 1 GB with RAM would make it very fast.

                    ..........
I had the same kind of problem in Galciv 1(gold edition) - not that it becomes unplayable, but definately slows down quite noticably.

As a rule in games like Civ/Ctp/Smac/Moo and any strat game that offers it, I always play with the largest game world I can choose. With the power available on modern processors I find it strange when I come across this?

                        1. "You don't need to explain who Tom Chick is. And there's a reason no gamers read his reviews.

The fact that he reviewed the game without playing multiplayer is suspicious. If he actually had a review copy, he'd have been able to play lots of online multiplayer with other reviewers who are on a special XBL. Further, he displays some profound ignorance of gaming history with his little speech about how Halo "proved console shooters could work, but Perfect Dark did that first". Goldeneye did it first, and Goldeneye was a far more popular game (and, IMO, better game) than Perfect Dark. He's also expecting a radical departure in gameplay from the previous Halo games? Is he ****ing crazy? Does he know how many people LOVE Halo as it is?

                        Sounds like a attention-grabbing "review".

2." No, I think the "gamers" on his site are more likely to be people like you. And no offense, but you're not exactly a "gamer" as is popularly used -- you do play games, sure, but typically you're 5-6 years behind the curve."

                        3. "The site looks second rate, just like Brad Wardell. The "review" is bad enough and suspect enough (it's been said by others at more reputable sites that they think the guy hasn't played Halo 3 at all) that it's worth avoiding."

4." From looking at that site, it seems to be predominantly about PC gaming. I can see why he's still bitter about Halo, then. Still, worthless site and review."

                        5. "Why would I post on such a worthless site? The guy's an unqualified bit actor who plays minor characters on TV shows, his reviews are awful (and likely dishonest, since he didn't get a review copy if he couldn't play it online), and the forums look vacant and boring. The fact that YOU recommend it for gaming purposes only cements it as a worthless site."

                        etc, etc, etc.

So you think asking a person who likes that site will somehow be an impartial judge as to whether my statements are correct or not? Bizarre.

seeing as the title of the thread is a request for a recommendation for my next strat game, and that since that OP Ive already ordered CK from Amazon, received it, and have been playing it for two days, why is it important to stay on topic?

I happened to be over at Qt3 where there was an INTERESTING, relatively civilized discussion of the Oct NPD data, and noticed Jon posted there, so I thought Id ask someone else who knows Qt3 to set the record straight here about.

And naturally the folks who know it best are the ones who spend lots of time there, and who presumably like it.

Just as naturally, the ones who know a given console best are the ones whove played it a fair amount.
