Always stick to the original.Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

I had Pirates! on my list, but there seem to be many other title around. I saw one bargain jewel case at Circuit city, something Tortuga. It's been a few years since I last played it (and wasn't impressed), but I do remember a few other things that annoyed the hell out of me:
1. The difficulty level could seriously need some fixing. The sword fighting on the second last level was very easy, but if you upped to the hardest difficulty level it became almost impossible. They need some difficulty levels in between those two
2. My favorite part of the game (the more civ-like attack of cities) was slow as hell. It took too long to move a unit from one tile to another
I'm pretty sure there was a lot of other things that annoyed me, but luckily I have forgotten about those by nowThis space is empty... or is it?

No, but following that logic we may as well have a space invaders first impressions thread."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.†Martin Buber

I remember having a ton of fun with the original on my Commodore 64. But the remake was utter meh.
Sid is great with turn based games like Colonization, Civ, and Alpha Centauri, but the rest of it doesn't impress me much. Probably just as well the dinosaur game never saw the light of day.Voluntary Human Extinction Movement http://www.vhemt.org/

Tortuga(ascaron) is more an rts/hack+slash game, no strat in it at all really.
I'll try a Pirate game list now(!):
Pirates! type games:
1.Pirates! original game, has some things better than the Gold remake, some things(mostly graphics) worse.
2.Pirates2 - a fan based remake improved graphics, free, a bit unfinsihed but worth a shot if you were a fan of the original:
Latest news coverage, email, free stock quotes, live scores and video are just the beginning. Discover more every day at Yahoo!
3.Pirates! Gold - better graphics than the original game.
If you really liked those games, the newer version will feel a little simple/dumbed down/kiddified etc - but that was the point of it.
Notable remakes of this great game are:
1. Cutthroats(Eidos) - kind of tries too hard to beat pirates! but the end result is a much more complex game(in pretty much all areas) that was not given enough time to be completed. Look for the patch and you will have lots of fun with it, but you can end up feeling "if only they had finished this feature" etc
2. Sea Legends(ocean software) - adds a 3d engine for ship battles, but plays like Pirates! while suffering the same kind of drawbacks that Cutthroats did - not really being that Pirates! killing game.
3D Pirate games:
1. Pirates of the Caribbean(bethesda) - only the first one in this series is worth looking at. It was a follow on to the excellent Sea Dogs, and bought by Disney to tie-in with the movie.
With the 'Build Mod'(look on the net for it) it becomes much more interesting a game.
2. Sea Dogs(Akella) - oldish looking but good Pirate/adventure/action/rpg game.
Tradeing Pirate type games:
1.Uncharted Waters(KOEI) 1+2: both fun games, pretty old school but offering lots of trade/rpg type game play.
2.Patrician(ascaron) 1-3: nice looking, detailed economic sims - you dont play as a pirate as such, but you often will become a victim of Piracy.
3.Port Royal(ascaron)1-2: bascialy the Patrician but set in the Caribbean
These are about the best of the Pirate themed games I've played, although having a look in mobygames list of Pirate games, there are many dozens I've never played!

No, THAT game I became familiar with when it first came out. Our grad school dorm financed a large TV and this new cool technolgy, a VCR, so we could have a movie night every weekend, from the quarter people put into Space Invaders, Joust, Ms Pacman, etc.
