Just ordered Mass Effect for $44. Dell has some awesome sales in Canada, probably the US too.

If I'd buy a console, it would be a 360. But I would make damn sure I get a Falcon. Its the best console on the market right now, IMO. The Wii as zero appeal to me. Its all kiddie games, if you ask me. And I don't care about the PS3 games.

It just that I rarely play games anymore and I think its generally a good thing. But there are always games, like Mass Effect, that threathen to suck me back in.

I just picked a copy up. I'll post some impressions after I have played it more.

To my mind that's the most balanced review yet. Most reviews flag similar issues and then don't reflect them in the score.

I'm still going to get it though, and hopefully BioWare will release an update to fix the worst problems.

That's one potential advantage to having to wait for the PC port. Lots of those issues will be fixed by the time it comes out. I'm sure there will be a bunch of PC bugs depending on hardware/software configuration to deal with anyway.

This makes no sense. The issues will be fixed on the 360 via patches if they're fixed on the PC port (which is probably at least a year a way, if at all, due to an exclusivity agreement). Plus, PC versions are always more buggy due to the increased complexity in the machines they run on.

The only advantage the PC has here is ease of piracy, which is what's killing the platform too.

Your response is exactly what I meant, Asher. KOTOR had all the little incidental bugs fixed by the time the PC release came out, but depending on which processor/video card/sound card/drivers the PC had it might work fine or might have problems. Me, I had no issues with it at first, but later on I changed from an nVidia to an ATI video card that had driver issues on Dantooine. No telling what problems if any I'll have with this one until it's out.

And the Xbox version did as well, due to game updates pushed through Xbox Live.

Id suspect that especially hurts games that might otherwise be released multiplatform - why release a game on PC as well as console, when you're only going to get a modest number of PC sales, and the PC piracy will hurt console sales too (IE someone who might have bought the game on console decides to pirate the PC version instead)

I think the main strength of PC gaming now is the genres that are weak/non-existent on consoles, but perhaps that was not what you were referring to.

Why do you think PC versions typically come out much later?

Well yeah thats a compromise, if you ARE gonna make a PC version, wait till the console game has been out for awhile, that way the piracy would only impact if the game has really long "legs" which most dont.

Even then I'm not sure it impacts. GTA sales didn't tank by any means when the PC version came out. Then again, no one bought it on the PC and everyone pirated it.

There are definitely some texture pop ups in the game, I don't think they take away much from the game though. Other than that, the game runs pretty smooth, it hasn't froze on me any yet. The story and characters are awesome. The combat definitely takes some getting used to. At first it is a little to much going on, with all the biotics and such. But once you get used to it is fun and challenging. The controls on the mako suck, no doubt about it. I have only explored a couple planets so far, most of the them seem to have similar quests, i.e. you find some debris, distress call, find a trigger that starts a side quest, etc.
