I think my main noble has been in power too long. Originally to save points and invest in other things I started without an anvil. I knew I could trade for one rather easily with stone crafts but it took me like 4 years to get one. Every time traders would come my noble would goto sleep after a while so I never managed to get one in time. Eventually I booted that noble off the trading job and used another dwarf. I did put him back now though because his skills are superior. After I got the anvil he seems go and trade fine. Coincidence...?

I had a noble like that. He finished sleeping then decided to go on a break. Just after the caravan left he decided to go back to work. I was after food and seeds at that point though... That was before I figured out to request the broker's presence at the trading post.

Ah yes, the Broker seems to puit more importance on everything, even on putting some old bones into the refuse zone.

"Sir, the caravan is about to leave and we need you as trader so that we can get plump helmets and other important supplies for the winter"

"Yes, I know, but see, these old bones. They first have to be thrown away, you know, nothing is more important than a tidy fortress."

"Yes sir, but I could do it as well sir."

"You know, maybe you could do it, but this is important work, a leaders work and I have to take care myself that it is done correctly.
So lets just throw me these bones away and then maybe I will meet the traders. Or maybe not, I am feeling tired, maybe I just go to the barracks and have sleep instead"

After having the problem as well almost every season I learned to switch off all of his duties as soon as the trade caravan arrives at the trading post.

But before this often I was also able to avert disaster (i.e. caravan leaving without having traded) by switching from "Only Broker may trade" to "Anyone may trade" as sooon as I got the message "The caravan from xyz will be leaving soon". I mean, the dwarf who does the trading then will normally be unskilled in such things, but hey, better getting a trade that is a little worse than you could get, than getting no trade at all

I sort of miss all the old nobles. I liked building rooms to meet their requirements. Now there are basically none? Can you still get kings, etc?

I haven´t played too much (and know only this version of the game),
but as soon as your population is above a certain limit (50 AFAIK) your expeditionleader gets elected as new major and some times later you also have a dungeon master arriving (who, amongst other things, demands an own tomb )

When you get above 20 you can appoint a sherrif who requires an office and his own dining room plus furnishings for his bedroom. Greedy little dwarf. Still, I'd presume as you get more nobles you will need to give them more elaborate rooms and furnishings.

My trader is also a miner / stone engraver. That way when the caravan arrives I only have to turn off two potential jobs and both of them are on the first page.

The nobles have been butchered out of the game I guess. Most no longer exist. I can't even seem to get an economy going anymore. I've been pegged at around 80-100 dwarves for a while. My main noble has quite a few social skills I started him with but almost none of them improve except for negotiator.

The game seems to be breaking down for me much faster than it did last version. Unless you get lucky and know where to choose a nice spot you likely won't get any cool stuff like monsters, lava, or adamantine, etc so that sucks. The main issue I have now though is I've built a huge fortress and all my dwarves keep getting fey moods killing off my skill base over time. I'm running out of trees so it's impossible to keep those skills up for instance.

I really think Toady needs another developer focused on fun/gameplay. He added a lot of features but it seems like a DF development is moving sideways fun wise. Not really improving or getting worse, but just changing somewhat.

Hm, I for my part like it that you don´t get everything on every map,
enhances the replayability not knowing if there is an underground river or Mamga or a chasm on the map (and lets you select your location very very carefully )

                    As for trees:
In my current fortress this problems seems to be solved after I accidentally flooded parts of my fortress (it is no good idea to make stairs from the reservoir below your well up to the well room, water knows how to climb them ). Now I have mud throughout the fortress and towercaps keep on growing like weed in most of the halls and rooms of my fortress (even the oiffice of my mayor has 3 of them )

                    As for nobles:
I think I read in their forum concerning nobles in the DF Wiki that the Wiki is just incomplete and that there are more nobles than mentioned in the Wiki to date.

Looks like Toady is going to release a new version this friday btw. (but seems to include mostly bugfixes)

Well if there are more nobles I can't seem to get them for whatever reason. I used to get them all the time in the old version doing the same things. The main reason I don't like each map having all the same stuff is that if you spend 10hrs playing a map and it doesn't have everything that's a huge waste of time IMO.

I think to get access to more nobles you need to enable economy. To activate the economy, you need to wait for the bug that prevents it ever activating to be fixed (maybe when the new version is released today).

And yes, it does fix up the bug that prevents the economy from starting. The baron arrives with the next wave of immigration, assuming you have met the criteria for him arriving. Hooray!

Now I need to down-grade the rooms I have made for peasants, children, babies and other assorted low-skill dwarves. I wonder if miners get paid well, as at least 30 of my dwarves are miners now. Also, aiming at different z-levels now works, so marksdwarves are much more useful.

Why 30 miners? I have like 2-5 max. They mine so fast isn't not even funny. Mining and engraving seem to be the only skills which max very easily. I still haven't managed an economy yet in the new version despite having a large fortress going and making near everything(coins, adamantine, clothes, armor, weapons, meals, etc). Just to give a rough idea my fortress created worth is 1.5 million or so.

                                For me, too.

Around 5 of my 80 dwarves are miners and 2 of them legendary (well, one became this due to hard work, the other [my leader] because of a fey mood in which he entered the masons workshop to produce Názomemeser, The Dreamy East Glitter, a Microcline grate [and consequently his first mandate when he became mayor was, to forbid the export of grates ])

Aside from the usual large number of dwarves that are busy in the workshops of my mines (or in the food producing industry) I also have a large workforce of masons, that build large structures outside of the mines, thereby using up large numbers of stones.
(the first one was a multi story storehouse for my stones (which therefore enablesd me to get rid of double the number of stones, for one the stones stored on each story and for second the stones used to build the story itself) and my recent outdoors project is a large multi story tomb house where all dwarves will be put to rest which are worth it (and the nobles of course )
It surprises how well you´re able to control the masses of stones as long as you devote part of your workforce for outdoor construction.
