  • A new Star Wars MMO, made by Bioware? The rumours could be true...

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and EDMONTON, CANADA — October 30, 2007 — LucasArts and BioWare Corp. today announced that they have entered into an agreement to create an interactive entertainment product. The product, details of which will be unveiled at a later date, will be developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, and will push the boundaries of the gaming market by utilizing the strengths of both companies to deliver an innovative, high-quality experience.

“LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare,” said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. “Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment.”

“BioWare’s mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans.” said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare Corp. Added Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare Corp., “The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games to market.

It's not the real BioWare, it's some studio in Austin bioware set up. All of the good BioWare games come out of the Alberta studio.

Because it's BioWare in name only. It's a brand new studio formed with cast-offs from a previous company in Austin, TX that went under.

The BioWare we know is the Edmonton-based studio. This team is 100% new and headed up by the producer/designer of Star Wars Galaxies (and also previously worked on The Sims Online)...

Defunct Austin game studio? Ion Storm, perhaps?

I hear it's going to be a FPS game like AA, where your side always appears as rebel troops and the other side always appears as Jar Jar Binks.

Asher is right, good games come from Canada, not Texas. Although it appears Bioware has already gone the route of dumbing down its games.

Austin has had a lot of game production out of it. Most of these companies are now defunct though. They include Digital Anvil, Origin, Jane's, and some other EA company.

I'm just curious how you know that what you consider the real Bioware isn't in the loop on this one. You mentioned 2 offices, but how can you know that the one you dislike is the one involved here?

Maybe the Bioware you allude to in Canada as the one we all know does indeed have a role in this project?

Besides, even if it is a different location, quality doesn't neccesarily suffer. I just want to know how you dug that out of the press release. A company has a vested interest in continuing quality, no matter how many offices are scattered around the globe.

How good could good ol' bioware be if they choose to hire inferior designers for their other offices? If that's the case, then i'd start to seriously examine the main office as well as your opinion of their games.

Games arnt products, they are people-though the industry likes to treat them like products. The team in austin will make a vastly different game from the team in canada. dedication to quality is irrelevant
