my impression is that the kind of folks who loved it dont spend much time posting on gaming sites (obviously there are exceptions).

It was a huge seller, and spawned a line of sequels, and clones.

I knew someone at work who talked about it, back in like '96 or so, when not too many folks talked about gaming at work.

That was about the same time I last heard about it, when one of my classmates talked about it. He told me to try it, but I couldn't get into it. Didn't give it a second try

There's never a wrong thread for a bit of Sims-bashing.

WoW. I am sooooo not getting into that boring crap.

I think the gaming scene was very different when myst came out. The graphics where snappy for the time, and games could cater to an older computer dork market - the first wave of computer geeks - who didn't grow up with computer games, and would tend to like things more slow paced and intelectual, like the brain teasers that they are probably more familiar with.

wow, didnt know Civ4 was hated by so many. I can join the club.

I also have to add Halo, Final Fantasy and SMAC to my list.

Morrowind (although the plugins persuaded me to give it another go)

Age of Empires/C&C (probably cause I'm no good at RTS)

                              Diablo (boring)

                              WoW (just didn't get it)
